I know, right. People keep saying Chrome is faster or even the fastest, yet Firefox seems to lock the GUI less than Chrome and Opera tended to prevent locking the GUI at all. I'll gladly waste a few ms in total page rendering time, let alone a few µs, if it means a more responsive, i.e. faster GUI. I find it incomprehensible that people generally prefer what I call Chrome-fast.

Fairly simple for a human to comprehend (regardless of state of origin), but not so easy for a logical machine (SPAM bot) to decipher.

Interesting. Unfortunately the system only allows one answer and is case insensitive. I did see a mod that allows you to put in regexes instead, which would be much more interesting. The version 2.1 currently in alpha is also supposed to feature more functional questions.

Opera has never been super-native either, but somehow it has always been within my comfort range. Chromium feels like a stranger on any platform, possibly including Android.

As for stats… Awstats complains that it's not enabled, and says that enabling it will reset some passwords. Sounds scary. O_o The forum itself logs the IP address, but I don't obviously notice it logging the user agent. I find that somewhat odd.

I haven't yet tested Australis, but I can tell you in advance that I like applications that abide by the way I tell them to look, and I don't like applications that think they should go against my preferences.[1] So if I have a theme with rounded tabs, sure, have rounded tabs, but otherwise, abide by my native GTK/Windows/whatever theme!

I do use Thunderbird, which already has rounded tabs. They're better than in Chromium because while they look rounded, on hovering they act like square tabs so you don't have those annoying areas where they don't work.

How much there is to like or dislike other than looks remains to be seen. But having to download an extension just to get a native GTK theme doesn't bode well. On the other hand, on Chromium/Chropera you wish you could download an extension…

[1] I make a slight exception of sorts for Qt4 vs. GTK type issues, but even so I've semi-separately set them up to look the same.

I've received two e-mails from the forum sent to me by string as a test, and I've exchanged a couple of PMs with j7n. Right now it sends it on behalf of my Gmail account, but I should probably set it up as something like no-reply@dnd.fransdejonge.com which will ignore whatever spam comes its way.

I don't think it's a good idea to subdivide forums too much prematurely. Most of them would just be sitting there empty and barren. The Lounge might be worth an exception in order to attract a slightly different public from My Opera, but generically  speaking my stance is that e.g. a Lounge forum shouldn't be created until a more generic forum is getting an awful lot of Lounge-type threads.

DnD Central / This is a testing forum
This forum is meant to test the software[1], the technical feasibility, and, to some extent, interest.

The goal isn't presently replacement of D&D or migration from D&D. Depending on what Opera decides, it may never be. For now, it is at most a safety net.

Please ask here if you have any questions about this forum not pertaining to administrative issues like forum categories, moderation, security questions, etc.

I've replaced the myopera question with the last question. Let's see if we get any spam registrations.

I'm not a fan of CAPTCHAs, but spam is a serious issue. Unfortunately spambots are better at solving them than humans, making them virtually useless (unless I customized it with a custom blackletter font or something, but some humans might have trouble with that too.)

I believe the option to ask questions is more user-friendly and for now hopefully sufficient against spammers. Specifically questions that can't be easily found with autocomplete on Google. But I'll give it more thought or ask for more input on that matter if I decide this is viable. :)

I evaluated several options. I can bore you by listing them all if you're interested. :P FluxBB and SMF were the winners from a user's perspective, which for me includes that it should work in pretty much any browser ever made. Unlike junk like Disqus, most forum systems actually passed that test.

Anyway, as a user I preferred FluxBB, but from the admin side of things SMF was the winner.

I disabled the hostname lookups like I said I would. I'll have to reenable them later to check whether it was that or just some server fluke.

I guess that might suggest a memory problem or something, except trying e.g. memory-intensive admin tasks does not fail. I'll disable hostname lookups (on by default) as suggested here, although as far as I can tell that should just result in slower loading times.
