Happy New Zealand!
That time of the years again, when parts of the world, not just rjhowie, are living in different years. New Zealand has made the transition, soon Australia's turn. Stockholm not for a while yet.

The New Year/Division is pretty unevenly divided across the planet though.
2½ hour ago: tiny Pacific islands that have made sure to be first
1½ hour ago: New Zealand and more tiny islands
½ hour ago: Easternmost slice of Russia, more tiny islands
In ½ hour: most of Australia
In 1½ hour: Japan, the Koreas
In 2½ hours: China, Philippines
In 3½ hours: Indochina including Indonesia
In 6 hours: India
In 8½ hours: Main parts of Russia
In 9½ hours: Greece, Eastern Europe
In 10½ hours: Most of Europe
In 11½ hours: The slow parts of Europe
In 14½ hours: Brazil
In 16½ hours: East coast of North America
In 19½ hours: West coast of North America
In 20½ hours: Alaska
In 22½ hours: Hawaii
and finally some more Pacific islands

A bit excitement in hours to come, then slow (South Asia doesn't put up much of a show), OK around Europe, then the Atlantic trench, then NYC and fadeout.

Yeah, congrats NZ and Kiribati and the rest.

Same as last new year, I am trying to find a live stream on YT that show the celebration fireworks in most places in turn. Right now I cannot decide if USA Today is better than NBC or not.

Edit: The protesters in Hong Kong cleverly stole the spotlight holding the banner "Never Going Back".

They seem to share same limited feeds. It should be possible to do better.

Anyway most of the world has entered 2020 already, and we haven't gotten to Europe yet (Russia and Turkey excepted).

It struck me that the population growth in Africa will balance this out somewhat. The Americas will still be kind of a post scriptum, but at least there will be a significant number of people left when we get to Eurafrica. It would be an East Asian spike, a South Asian spike, but the biggest spike will be Eurafrica. Yay, us.

Yes, it seemed better last year. They keep getting worse.

Even in 2020, Turkey is still not Europe.

And Britain has left the building. Again.

And the world has almost reconverged again. Baker Island (in IDLW) is still left in 2020.

The day may have 24 hours, but based on time zones it has 26.

Happy New year to you all. Lang May Your Lum Reek, as we say round my neighbourhood.
The start and end to every story is the same. But what comes in between you have yourself to blame.

And now we have entered the day of divergence again.

You know the drill.

And this day of divergence can easily turn into a year of divergence.

Anyway happy New Zealand again in 27 minutes.

FBI boss Kash Patel gave New Zealand officials 3D-printed guns illegal to possess under local laws
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — On a visit to New Zealand, FBI Director Kash Patel gave the country’s police and spy bosses gifts of inoperable pistols that were illegal to possess under local gun laws and had to be destroyed, New Zealand law enforcement agencies told The Associated Press.

The plastic 3D-printed replica pistols formed part of display stands Patel presented to at least five senior New Zealand security officials in July. Patel, the most senior Trump administration official to visit the country so far, was in Wellington to open the FBI’s first standalone office in New Zealand.
I don't think this is excusable just by plain stupidity. Already under earlier supposedly saner administrations USA was imposing their own lawlessness on other countries, for example the visa waiver program where foreign visitors have to go through a visa procedure to find out if they qualify for a visa free entry, and if they indeed qualify, they receive a document to that effect, i.e. under visa freedom à la USA you apply (and receive) a visa to show that you have visa freedom. And now the EU has a similar "visa freedom" procedure against third countries, even though this arrangement has been postponed against USA.

The method of the stupid is to bring others down to the same level of stupid. I'm quite sure that this is what Kash Patel is doing here: "Hey, I brought guns. Shoot each other like we do in USA. Hee-hee."
All travelers to New Zealand are required to declare any guns or gun parts when entering the country, New Zealand’s border security agency confirmed Wednesday. The agency, Customs, wouldn’t disclose what declarations Patel made on arrival.
Had he declared them, the story would be different: Either New Zealand officials do what they are supposed to and destroy the guns or, in an attempt to avert an international incident with the beacon of freedom to the world, they would go out of their way to cover up that such gifts were brought and given. Since the story is what it is, Kash Patel obviously did not declare the gifts - he just barged in to New Zealand like a boss that he assumes he is.

And it had.

Happy new day of divergence anyway!
