In any case, I think the law says I can't accept such an honor from a foreign government as an American citizen. I could be wrong of course.

You become a "Sir" with a knighthood and if going to the Lords you become equally a Lord. Different from getting a medal and the MBE or OBE after your name. In my personal world a very good friend of mine over in Ulster was given the OBE for services to The Boys' Brigade and another man I know got the lower MBE and above both is the CBE. All deserving and they don't just go the those higher up these days some very ordinary people in long ordinary positions have neen awarded them.There is yet another who was Knighed by Her Majesty to become a Sir. And yep you get touched on the shoulders with a sword.
