My countryside grandmother had something like that. Dialling made no sense as you only called the switchboard anyway. In about a decade that changed into all-digital switching, though still with analog local loop.

Those lines also had the peculiarity that they were shared, one house had to get off the line for another one to call. Of course muxing was the motivation for the switch to digital in the first place.

Dead signal would be nice but this has been optimised away too.

Funny, I remember in American movies how they shout into phones "Hello, hello!" as if they didn't hear the dead signal. Was there any? And sometimes they beat the cradle of the phone and - voila - this miraculously restores the connection! What is going on with American phones? Is it just the movies? Or is it really the way NSA designs phones?

A scoop of both.:)
With the old poor movie sound it was natural to depict the "dead line" by the actor on this end expressing that shoutedly.:D As for the "physical repair" -- NAH!:lol: - didn't you live in the USSR not to know about the mechanic sensitivity of most ancient devices?:)

My phone beeps when the call is ended by the other party. Prevents talking to nothing I guess.

Given caller ID, saying "hello" is a bit dated. With friends I usually start with something that skips the "hello" -"hey" part.

Telephones are like television, people think that those machines are what we were used to (and so useful things both were) but no, they turn it into behavior manipulation drivers and nothing else.

Oh I can remember Tandy/Radio Shack. Here in Gt Britain it was known as Tandy and had shops across Britain including 2 in Glasgow city centre. But the chain the chain disappeared here some years ago. When I was in New York it was of course Radio Shack and I did buy from them whilst there. It was a candlestick phone with a proper dial. Always liked the dial phones and you can get them here on the Net but now a main electrical chain is selling them for £56 so going todecide on a colour get one (you can also still get a dial candlestick phone on the Net).

We still have those. Mostly full of cards for iTunes and mobilephones now. I guess they thought they were keeping up with the times, but in the process they eliminated any reason to go there. Kinda like Opera that way.

A way back in my earlier days there was only one service provider (now a whole lot of them) and in some areas you waited ages to get a landlline. On top of that sometimes it was a shared line. Where we lived at the time it went on for a while and my mother got fed up with it and on the phone to complain. She said it was time they sorted out the nonsense of a shared line and got our own. During the conversation I had to groan. She told them during her harangue that her son was a lieutenant and busy and his captain could not always get through to him a ridiculous situation. However in the heat of her complaint she hadn't told them the ranks were in a national youth movement The Boys' Brigade. We got sorted within the week!

Well, I do feel old! But it's not so bad really. I've even got me a new smartphone --one that works.  (Of course, I still have a land line set, and an answering machine; and a pager...)
And I finally fixed my old Mac mini!

I begin to see the problems with using a phone to post on forums... 👎 But my phone's predictive suggestions are quite good. (When I think to use them...)

I'm currently in the process of recovering my favorite software... Sort of fun, ya know? Like seeing the OS tell me that jEdit won't install... (Just needed the jre installed first!) Ha! But Panic's old Audion mp3 (and stream) player was gone for good... Oh, well. (Swinsian works fairly well.) I've become a fan of Opera 71; and the new GX is interesting.
(But I still have Opera 11 installed!)
You'd have to call me old-fashioned: I still have, and use, a peripheral floppy disk drive!

I asked about iPhone because I remember you were using a Mac, and Mac users tend to stick to the ecosystem. Mac users being a tight cult, there is a possibility that the cult members leave their old gear and devices to less-well-off members.

On a Mac? So Mac is not modern enough to automatically link to dependencies? Good to know that my staying away from Mac has been worth it.

Let's start at the end and work our way back to the beginning, eh? :)

It seems I'd got a version of Opera 10 confused with 11... Oops! It hung, repeatedly! Out of frustration I went into its Bookmarks on my old Panther (X 10.3...) system and found an old user's pages (still up and running) and downloaded Opera 11.62, the "11" I remembered: It's using my prefs and such, sharing with the earlier installation.
As you can see, it works just fine!*

Congrats for a successful post on Opera 11 :up:

Why do you prefer jEdit and for what? I personally stay away from anything that requires Java Runtime Environment. In the 00's JRE was difficult to avoid (e.g. "online gaming" of the time) but very easy now.

My fav light text editor is Nano and the heavy one is Emacs. Both are younger than me, according to their release dates in Wikipedia.

I think most of us are older than Emacs, though when I first used it had been around forever. Now that I looked it up, it had only been around about six years. TeX was still new, fresh, and exciting.

Both fortunately, long, long, long behind me.
