Basically putting up telephone poles across country I presume, but maybe it was setting up switches or something ridiculous. About the same period they made the transition from manual to automated switching. The company that was so ahead of the curve for mobile telephony was way behind the curve for land lines. Later they would dabble in most everything digital, and later Internet, even making a web browser they didn't know what to do with, and that was the start of Opera Software.

In the 1930s, my grandfather (dad's father) definitely had a home phone because he always had to be reachable for his job. In the 1950s, my mother's parents did not.

I can remember havin' To duck under several times as I made my way thru when my parents were on it. Then we had a portable phone toward the end of the 80's. A rather large staticy thing with what was just short of a tower for a antenna. Proper "instillation" of some aluminum to the antenna helped the limited range a bit, iirc. I'll have to ask mom what she remembers having in the 50's. Judging by some of her stories of growing up in rural Kentucky I suspect she didn't have one until later.

When was the last time you actually ended a phone call by hanging up?
