Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #1 – 2016-05-29, 17:10:50 I've read the novel and seen the movie and liked both. The movie was made in 1940. I was a bit too young to have seen it in a theater, so I must have seen it on TV.Here's the 1940 production of John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath".https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwXU-_r19w4
Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #2 – 2016-05-30, 07:53:36 Certainly not my favorite, but I was pleasantly surprised by Michiel de Ruyter last night. A very Hollywoodish movie, but nevertheless it was everything 300: Rise of an Empire (which I watched last week) wasn't. It has speeches about freedom and the republic, heroic naval battles against the English and the French — everything an American audience (as defined by Hollywood) should love. But if you are going to watch a Dutch movie, start with something like Turks fruit (Turkish delight) instead.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewaRSOevgfM
Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #3 – 2016-05-30, 10:15:25 A Warcraft movie is out. I think I will go see it, because the game has been my approximately only advanced game that I have played extensively, as advanced as Warcraft II was in 1997 or so. I always thought the settings and characters eminently filmable.
Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #4 – 2016-05-30, 10:39:14 I wouldn't get your hopes up. I too want to watch this Warcraft movie eventually, but certainly not while it's in theater. In vaguely related news, apparently they made a new Ben-Hur movie, and from the trailer it looks like typical CGI awfulness. The one with Charlton Heston is more appropriate to this topic, as it is indeed one of the best movies I've seen.Back to Warcraft, I've always felt that just like Command & Conquer is a cheesy sci-fi with a good game, Warcraft is a cheesy fantasy with a good game (and Starcraft is a different kind of cheesy sci-fi with a good game). Not that I have a problem with cheesy fantasy per se, but my expectations are suitably low. I have much higher hopes that the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot will be a good movie.
Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #5 – 2016-05-30, 11:32:51 Warcraft no good you say? Must go see Angry Birds then instead.Edit: I took time to watch the Warcraft trailer just now. Wasn't there a faint hint of a love story between a male human and a female orc? That sux majorly. I am looking forward to a big heroic war epic and war heroes don't do love stories, particularly not with the enemy. There may be some traitorship on either side for various reasons, but anything more than that is ruled out. Love stories suck. I'm pretty sure Angry Birds will have no love story sideline. Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #6 – 2016-05-30, 12:57:45 Angry Birds just may be surprisingly good. Actually I have no idea. But I guess my point is that since it's just a game about tossing birds at things (isn't it?) the story can be just about anything. Warcraft has baggage. I suspect I'd rather rewatch Willow or Labyrinth.Dropping in another good movie to complement Ben-Hur, Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo is one of the best as well as most depressing movies I've ever seen.

Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #10 – 2017-03-23, 12:12:07 Last time this thread came up I listed Brazil as my all-over favourite, and I'll stick to that. While there has been much great TV the last few years, I can't say the same for movies. The big budget ones, US or otherwise, are very formulaic (though sometimes quite slick), and the low-budget ones haven't been interesting either. If I were asked which is the best movie the last three years my answer would be none (unless I've forgotten some unforgettably brilliant one).
Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #11 – 2017-03-23, 16:09:00 Hm, the last three years. The LEGO Movie was pretty decent, as was Guardians of the Galaxy and Mad Max. I hear Elle's pretty good but I haven't seen it. But yeah, Fargo was much better than Kumiko.
Re: The Best Movies You've Seen...And Why! Reply #12 – 2021-10-01, 10:02:19 The latest Bond movie is not bad. It's about as good as Casino Royale (the first Daniel Craig entry) in my opinion. Some complain that the villain in the latest Bond movie was not very menacing, but I'd say the same about Casino Royale. Besides, despite the latest movie being longer, its storyline was tighter than in Casino Royale, so it felt shorter, even though some scenes could have been shortened. Particularly the dialogue was not too smart and could have been cut here and there without any loss. But it did not fall into too many wokeness traps, for example they featured a cigar approvingly, which was nice.I have seen all Bond movies up to Daniel Craig's first and now I have also seen Daniel Craig's last.
