That was a most interesting New Year. Started having power cuts on New Years Eve, and all through the day yesterday. Electricity board digging up the road in front of the house, making a lovely racket.

House full of folk too, thank goodness for candles or it would have been a very different day.

Hope your house doesn't rely on electric heater,  that would've been disastrous. I might buy a battery operated gas lamp, just in case of power shortage.

Thankfully we have gas heating, so we were OK. Couldn't cook anything but we had a lot of stuff prepared that kept us all going. Could have done with a coffee though.  ;)

I don't think our gas furnace works without electricity.

I was wondering why gas heating would need electricity to work, but I guess it has a thermostat that decides when it should come on.
Can't think of any other reason why it would require electricity.  ???

Temperature control? Mine is a water radiator, which I guess is cheaper for apt buildings. But I also have a portable electric heater next to my bed that I turn on at night. It has a temperature control so it goes to standby when it reaches a certain temperature.

No coffee on New Year's eve?  :ko:
The worst kind of disaster known to mankind.

We have one of them too as there's no other heating in the bedroom. A very handy thing to have.

That's worst than not having a beer on New Year's eve. :yikes:

Everything except the flame requires electricity. On/off logic, pumping water around the radiators, etc. In theory I suppose you could light the flame yourself and generate steam to drive a pump or some such, but that sounds inconvenient at best. :P

Gas or air has nothing (or at least little) to do with price. In America air is popular because it can be used for both kinds of climate control (i.e., heat in winter and cold in summer) whereas radiators only serve for heating.[1] Over here in my part of Europe we tend to prefer using radiators only because there is zero benefit to A/C for more than a week or maybe two in summer. Air ducts can potentially get infested with mold and stuff.[2]

Also we, or at least I, find it utterly stupid that in America you practically have to take a jacket to go into a store or a movie theater. It's not just a waste of energy, it's just uncomfortable. It's not like you're wasting energy but at least you're comfortable. No, you're wasting energy so that you're uncomfortable. It's ludicrous.  :faint:
I wonder if anyone's tried pumping cold water around 'em? It'd result in undesirable condensation of course, so even if someone did I imagine they quickly found it was no good.
There is far more to costs than installation costs. Or at least so anyone with half a braincell would hopefully take into consideration. :P

It is if you don't drink beer.  ;)

That makes it a bit clearer.  :P

I did get one of my front teeth knocked loose by a hockey stick.

You have to watch out for sports equipment. I had my front tooth broken by a golf club, that some yobbo decided to use as a weapon. :(

our cans of beans come with their own opening... thingies.

Seems to depend on which brand we buy, some have them some don't.
I'm good at pulling the things off though and then having to look for a can opener, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I've decided to try out  Vivaldi for a few days to see what it's like now that it's stable version is at 1.14. It wasn't something I intended doing, but the latest firefox has annoyed so much.  :irked:

One site in particular has trouble loading the full page and it takes 3 or 4 refreshes before it displays properly and I finally got fed up of it, no problems with Vivaldi so far.

Huh, weird. I'm actually enjoying Firefox 57/58 a lot more than I anticipated. Firefox has finally bothered to implement some stuff like correct Ctrl+Tab behavior as a built-in option since at least Fx 52, so you don't need Tab Mix Plus anymore, and it's very fast and responsive. I still think they're stupid for killing the next Firebug before it has a chance to be born but it's overall better than the mainstream competition.

Vivaldi is okay, five years down the line Opera is somewhat catching up to Opera as it was around 2000, Otter is pretty great too… I mean, I miss Opera/Presto but I'm a lot more hopeful today than I was five years ago after Opera's death.

Some people are stupid and overly focused on Chrome. I'm generally more inclined to blame websites. :P

I know what you mean, but checked it in all the browsers that I have including Opera 12.18 and IE 11 and only Fx has the problem, so something odd is going on and it's been happening since Fx 52 and I've just got fed up with it.

That's a lot of CDs in one box  :D

It sure is and the good thing is there's not been one bad track in any of them that I have played so far.
It's not often you can say that about a bands output.

If you have it with fries, that should be enough vegetables for your daily quota.  ;)
