I was at the grocery store and they have boxes of eggs cut in half for 0.99¢. So you can buy 6 eggs for 0.99¢ and don't have to buy a box of a dozen eggs for $1.87. But on the next shelf the same boxes of a dozen eggs are on sale for 0.79¢. So...you can either buy 6 eggs for 0.99¢ or spend 0.79¢ for a dozen eggs :lol: :whistle:

That happens all the time here with many different product, it's absolutely bonkers.

I can't remember what version I had, but it was definitely way better than IE 5. I also had an earlier version of Firefox but it was a little heavy on my 300Mhz computer. :)

Version 7 stayed on my computer but I only used it occasionally, it was version 8 that got me totally hooked. It was my browser of choice after that.  :)

In my case, it was Opera Mini 3 on my flip-phone that got me hooked.  The browser that came with my flip-phone didn't have a scroll option. So if I press the arrow down button, it highlights from one link to the next one from top to bottom. If there are 20 links on my phone screen, I have to click 20 times before it reaches the bottom link and then it scrolls a tiny bit down. :whistle: Opera Mini solved that stupid issue with a one-click scroll down button. :yes:

That would have been enough to put me off using a phone for browsing the net.  :down:

Besides making it usable, Opera Mini also made if affordable to browse the web on the 2 MB data bundle I had over a decade ago.

Yup, I would've give up browsing the net on my flip-phone if it wasn't for Opera Mini. This was back before smartphones with touchscreen came about.

Only 2 MB? :eyes: That sounds pretty expensive.  I think my flip phone came with 50 MB, and then an additional $25 for another 50 MB after that. But yeah, with the default phone browser 50MB can get used up within a week but Opera Mini really extends the data usage :up:

Didn't sound like you browse the net on your phone that much. I watch a lot of YouTube or listen to a music channel on my phone a lot, especially when I'm on the bus :)

I think I've had a cell since '99, some Motorola model. Something similar in general principle to this, with an antenna and that keyboard cover, but doubtless generations newer 'cause that seems to be early '90s. A while later I got a WAP-capable Nokia 3310 but I didn't really use that (too costly), then an SE T630 (?), followed by an SE s500i, an SE Xperia ray and now an ASUS Zenfone 2.

The T620/630/whatever roughly coincided with Opera Mini, and sometime after trying Opera Mini I decided to add the data bundle to my subscription. This is also around the time when I first encountered YouTube, probably a few months after it got started. But I had zero interest in watching that on my phone. Can you imagine the data usage, even at GPRS speeds? :P

I did watch videos on my s500i on occasion (mostly to try it out), but I converted those on my desktop and then loaded them onto the phone. A few 100 MB over the wireless network would've been absurdly costly besides being super-slow.

I did use Google Maps on my s500i. It was pretty neat. It triangulated your location so it was within a few tens of meters from your actual location within seconds. It went something like this if memory doesn't betray me:

  • You're connected to this celltower, so you should be within this 2km or so radius.
  • I triangulated a little, so you must be within this 100-250m radius.
  • I triangulated some more, so you must be within this 20-50m radius. I can't do better than that but it only took me a few seconds.

I think the GPS location on newer phones is actually much worse in some ways. Before it figures out your exact location within a meter or two from GPS it's basically just hopelessly lost for sometimes annoyingly long.

I've seen those Motorolla with antenna, they were probably the earliest cellphone ever existed. :D My first flip phone was a Nokia, but I didn't get to watch YouTube 'till I got my 3rd phone a couple years later. :)

Although I also remember seeing vids from the '70s or '80s (and possibly even early '90s?) of people carrying around these big boxes with basically a regular phone on top. I guess those are carphones but I'm not sure if everyone used them in cars. :P

Cars and yachts. They were not pocketphones they way modern mobile phones are. In this part of the world only govt officials had them. Bodyguards had to carry the phone.
