Some distros, such as Mageia, conservatively come with ESR on board. I will avoid FF 29.

I'm using ESR and so far it's OK.

That being said, I don't use Firefox much. As far as I'm concerned they already went on a clear route to Chrome-wannabe since 4.0, anyway. 3.5/3.6 was the pinnacle of Firefox GUI.

Will IceWeasel be affected somehow?

It would seem that Google is god. For proof, witness the race to the bottom that Google's Chrome browser has started.

Frenzie, that link you provided has a link within it to an add-on that restores Firefox to reasonable looks, if not reasonable usability. I tried it just a few minutes ago, not great maybe but not too bad. Especially since "great" seems to be a goal that nobody is working towards anymore. Minimizing everything so a barely-trained ape using a cell-phone browser can use it seems to be the goal these days.  :monkey: :banana:

As FF becomes Australis, Iceweasel becomes a fork rather than mere rebranding, I suppose. I also think that Vimperator won't be affected. Vimperator is in active development and can keep both its own interface and compatibility with FF. (I don't use Vimperator myself.)

I am using both Cyberfox  28 and Firefox 29 on a regular basis. With the right extensions, Fx Australis 29 can look the same as Firefox 28. Unlike Opium, Firefox is still highly customizable.

Updated and ... looks like they're trying to make the X11 version look like the one for Android which in turn tries to look like Chrome. Took me a minute or so to get the menu bar back, otherwise things arent too horrible.

Things are horrible at my main work. Everybody's Win computer is being changed to Linux Mint. I got mine today, fully updated. This means that I am working in Australis interface now.

Naturally I don't have admin privileges. We'll see if I care go through the extensions hassle to change FF back to something what it used to be.

Also, there's a bug (feature?) in Cinnamon desktop environment that causes FF always to confirm when closing multiple tabs. No FF tweak in about:config helps. This must be something in Cinnamon desktop, because it doesn't happen in other Mint editions.

At work, I have learned to live with it. It's not like they changed keyboard shortcuts or took any necessary features away. It doesn't operate too differently.

But everywhere else besides workplace, I have replaced it. If a distro ships with it, I uninstall FF. Seamonkey is (again) the best Mozilla.

I prefer to use only Portable Versions of FireFox.

I have Compatibility Disabled, & some of them are no longer supported by their creator so I needed to update the max version # myself.

Sometimes that works, but then again sometimes it doesn't....  Not being a programmer, I rely on pot luck.

Now, FireFox V29 Australis works ok, but the changes were a pain to overcome & adapt to, & I find the new Customize Toolbar a real abortion, so I have decided to stay with the Portable ESR which so far hasn't gone to Australis. If it does, I will stop with the last non-Australis version.

If anyone needs Custom Toolbars for Australis, there is an undocumented extension (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/77691265/toolbars.xpi) I came across which can provide you with as many (or as few) as you wish. Experienced programmers can adjust the number of toolbars generated in the overlay.xul

That's an impressive number of extensions!

Yeah, The only impact I see with them is the initial loading time, & Re-Start cycle times (+/- 35 seconds).

I'm willing to live with them, but there might be a few I could cull without too much impact to my simple browsing habits.

A year after switching to Firefox from Opera 12, I have gotten very comfortable with Firefox and a couple of its 64 bit branches.

Cyberfox-30.64 in on both my laptop and desktop as default browser.
Waterfox-30.64 is being tested on my laptop.
On a USB 3.0 portable drive:

I'm sure I could cull the patch a tad, but I've been collecting them for years, & the only time I rid myself of one is when there's a conflict, or it impacts on what I want to do.

So, if they sit there & mind their own business, & leave 'em be.

What do you FireFox users think of the Custom Buttons Extension?

A number of my buttons have been negatively impacted upon by recent FX changes, but the CB community always seems to find a fix.

Mine as well, for the most time as you can see :)

My main browser is FireFox Portable v24.7.0 ESR, but my first go-to-browser would be/is Opera v12.16.

Actually I have about 25+ browsers at my fingertips, which opens the open URL in whatever browser I choose via a 1 button press from a drop-down menu:



So, if I open a site in FFx & I don't like what I see, or it just isnt quite right, or I think there's more to be had, I just open my Browser Launcher Button & choose the browser I want to give the present URL a run on (From the above list).

I have heard rumours that newest official ESR now sports the same Australis interface and the next update cycle on our Linuxes will bring it on to us.

I have ESR on one machine. Seamonkey on other personal machines. Australis at work.

Many extensions are not my thing. On Seamonkey I have some adblock (Adblock Edge right now), wmlbrowser, some themes (true themes), nothing more. On ESR I have, in addition, more copy-paste and tab management features. That's it.

In Firefox 31, the browser.tabs.closeButtons option was removed. This addon forces what previously used to be a value of 2 for that option: no close buttons on any tabs.

This is far beyond ridiculous. The updates consist purely in removal of options. How is the work invested into removal of usability justified? Is it meant to provide extension authors with a happy sense of being useful?

I don't even expect anything to be part of the standard toolset anymore. Just a few hours ago I was looking for an extension to choose where to save my file, but apparently browser.download.useDownloadDir does the trick. In fact it's even available under the General tab in Preferences.

JFYI....Just checked out v31 Portable......nothing shockingly new from 29 & 30 to speak of, & Australis is still not my cup of tea..that's why I'm back to v24.7.0 ESR Portable.

Reopen closed windows as opposed to closed tabs? How about looking into history when you reopen the app?

Ah no, perhaps I should've said closed pages. "Tabs" are stupid. :) But closed windows would be a pertinent question as well. Sessions are for when you've closed all application windows (the difference between Alt+F4 and Ctrl+q).

Edit: or maybe there's a way to make the history view faster. Meh, I wish those Qt5.2 fonts would become usable already so I could use Otter.

Edit 2: clarification, I have no idea what happened, but trying to start Opera today just results in it eating all of my RAM within seconds and having to kill it. Of course making a fresh profile and only sticking in what I need should be easy, but the browser is unfortunately starting to show its age. I've noticed that I've needed to resort to Fx more frequently lately.

ESR went Australis in Manjaro update last weekend. Now I have totally ridded myself from FF in all home machines.

Now that I have Seamonkey everywhere, Thunderbird looks like complete waste of space.

With the CTR extension (classic theme restorer) Australis isn't an issue. At least not for me.

Pale Moon just went to it's v25, so if you're liking the FireFox of Pre-v29 with a few 'new' twists, it might be something of interest.

I assume that you will use this Firefox fork with less extensions since many (maybe the most FF extensions) don't work with PM anymore.

Tile Tabs is the extension pretty important for my work (or rather to the way I work). Sad that it's not available for Seamonkey. Maybe some little hack would make it work, but I am not in the mood to figure it out for now.

The last few updates of FF have been adding nothing to browsing, only removing options and disabling extensions. The reasonable conservative skin of FF is Palemoon. Happy new year, FF, but you are now uninstalled.
