Agreed.

For the question/issue of ships' particulate matter emissions this depends heavily on the fuel. Ships have traditionally had no regulation, and many use (literally) dirt cheap fuel of the nastiest kind. They are belching sulphur and NOx as well, all to save a quick buck.

Electrical ships can't come too soon.

The new ferry to Texel goes on gas and some solar electricity. It's extremely clean, an inspiration to the world apparently.

No?? nuclear ships existes since the fifties or sixties. Nuclear produces endless electricity.
Title: Re: DnD entropy
Post by: ersi on 2018-02-27, 06:27:20
Indeed. Why use nuclear and coal and all that, when we have electricity?
Title: Re: DnD entropy
Post by: jax on 2018-02-28, 05:59:35
There are some cases of on-site power production on nautical vehicles, e.g. sail ships. Mostly the energy is generated off-site and used on-site from an energy store.

We have half a century experience with nuclear powered ships, and that experience is not good. It is harder to come up with safe designs for an ocean-going vehicle, and the consequences if they are not out at sea is much worse.

Unless there is a strategic reason to do otherwise, e.g. obliterate the country that obliterated yours, you would be better off using electric energy from land-based nuclear power plants. They are safer,  cheaper and located at the border to somebody else's problem. They are not mobile hijackable dirty bombs.

No? Why not?
Nuclear powered ships and submarines made the biggest developments for human adventure discovering the world.. Do you have anything better?
Course mobile vehicles such as those can't use land based power producing.

Any story invoking "Ansaldo Breda" is unlikely to have a happy ending, though they themselves had an end, being bought by Hitachi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitachi_Rail_Italy).

Quality only comes if you ask, plan, and test for it. Get rich quick schemes come with the opportunity.

The problem is not in the material to discuss, the problem is in inside our souls. People are tired of this model.
Or maybe better, we know each other already totally, there's nothing to discuss.
No new people, no motivation.

Not at District Court level. In England Magistrates tend to sit in three but up here in the northern part of the kingdom, Scotland they sit with just one judge (a legal advisor in a gown beside him/her) but the justice wears a gown unlike over the Border. It is not a paid position although any expenses can be got.

Chemistry is alchemy where the spooky aspects such as spiritual and immaterial have been cut off.
Yep. The same happens with old and modern ("scientific") medicine.
I was reading a XVIII century medicine text and got very surprised with the extreme lucidity of thought and rigor of analysis. What have basically evolved in medicine were the machines for every and all diagnosis.

Old doctors discussed if fever was a fluid or a humor, moderns ones have no idea about the whys and they don't care, enough to know that fever appears as a body reaction and some particular substance makes it to go down.

Yes, presumably next record would be minimum 4 1/4 days, at least very close to it.

Should be fairly easy to automate. It's now <time elapsed> since last post. If that <time elapsed> is longer than previous record, users would be informed that any such post would break a record (and if they don't, someone else will).

Russia Ukraine incident: Duma 'to honour ship seizure troops'

The speaker of Russia's lower house of parliament plans to give state awards to the border guards who fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels and 24 sailors a week ago, Russian media say.

Old friends, political adversaries, fellow combatants, cherished one & all......you are all missed.....each & every one of ya........

I have to admit, even though I would rarely post, I regularly stopped in to see "what's new & happening".....finding nothing that jarred my adrenalin....I trekked elsewhere.......I know I'm not alone because we had such good times here......probably more than most would think or imagine.

I wonder, when each of us registered into the forum, we all used an email address......couldn't a post or two to those addresses possibly alert the owners to stop on by, if for nothing else than to say "I got the message, so I came here, saw nobody & nothing interesting outside of memories, but I needed to leave my mark just to let anyone who might give a damn a sign that the lights are still on"......like a sign-in for others to note, & maybe say hi.....even elaborate where they might be found & under what handle they are using of late, just in case contact might be in the cards if one so pleases......dunno, but these are my thoughts for what it's worth....

Just for your information my lights are still on.......& I've been darting around the southern hemisphere.....Island by Island.....soaking up the toxic sun, & enjoying retirement......I still maintain constant contact with many dozens of friends, & former employees, now friends, in the States.....& yes I am still an active firearm/Second Amendment advocate, & I shoot often when I'm Stateside.....the ranks of my military service buddies have dwindled considerably......many of which have just faded away, but those still active.....hell we have a blast when we do huddle up for annual old yarns.....maybe a tad slower, but still just as sharp!!

Well........all the best to you all.....to those that may read this.....my first mate says were into some good fishin' here soon, so I gotta go & get topside....I taste tuna today.......but know as long as DnD is still kickin', I'll be stoppin' by to take a look at "wuts happnin".........Cheers gents.....hope life's been good to ya'll!!!  (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cheerskj4.gif)  (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cowboypistol_004.gif)

I had Opera Mobile on SE P800, a Symbian phone on 2003 or 2004, and Mini on some Java-enabled phone a bit later. Opera Mobile for SE P800 was a very good version that I happily used until the phone's battery became unsustainable almost a decade later.

I have no use for new Chropera. I used the old Opera more for email and IRC than for browsing the web, and the new one doesn't do email, except for webmail, which is a bit different thing. The new Chropera also lacks some of the convenience features of Vivaldi, so really no use for Chropera.

For a while I had mutt set up, but Opera 11 is still my main mailer and browser for this forum. For sentimental reasons, I guess.

What can I say, beyond stating the fact that my previous exchange was irrefutably shown to be pointless...? :)

There are conversations to which I'd like to return! But -despite the COVID lockdowns here- it's a quite busy time. (When last I returned it seemed that Howie was trying to keep the place going all by himself! Now: His snit might suit him well enough. Ah, well.) I do still check every now and then on the activity here, meaning Central.
Hope to resume being a pest after the New Year holiday...

Yes, because Christmas. It's Christmas lockdown style this time. Keep it merry!

For the second time the entropic interval increase happened here in the entropy thread, last time was message 31 (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=3007.msg81104#msg81104).

We can imagine a far-flung future, in the throng of the universal heat-death, where this thread alone is updated irregularly by perfectly well-formed and valid messages from semi-sentient Perl scripts hawking Viagra to a species that no longer exists, because if they ceased,  they wouldn't exist either. This site, long ago self-hosted off-world, would be one of the last remnants of this lost one, that apart from the flashes of Perl-by-perpetual-night remains completely tranquil. Anyway, new update.

Soon I will be on vacation too. Probably not going to go anywhere, because the covid hassle is making it not worth it.

I need to read a book that a childhood friend published. It's about her childhood. So, if I find that I am not in the book, I think I will tell her to rewrite it properly.

I also think that a Trump will run, but it is going to be a very short run, either utterly embarrassing or utterly forgettable. He won't get half as far as Larry Elder, not even a quarter.

Now we're three, basically.

Was setting up escape plans for Twitter, expecting a slow Sanctuary-like decline over years. Like real-life events, things may unravel much sooner than that. Anyway, I came across Bridgy (https://brid.gy/) (Fed (https://fed.brid.gy/)), and got me thinking whether we would want something con-federated or otherwise connected, or just slowly fade out.

This particular software doesn't connect this with that (yet?), but would there be something we wanted if such software existed?

Title: Re: DnD entropy

Easily, or too quiet. But with the right gate could be about right, perhaps.

I like forums. I don't like blogs much. And while microblogs like Twitter and Mastodon are OK, they are not really forums.

Forums worked when there was some site filtering right amount of people, Opera in our case. RSS kind of worked when there was a blogosphere. For fun, I checked the Wikipedia entry (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Blogosphere&action=history), last non-vandal edit was exactly one year ago. Not dead, but not very much alive either.

I've always found the term tiresome and don't mind its demise in that sense. But the fact that Twitter took over a lot of it is a bit of a pity. Incidentally, traditional newspapers have finally started linking sometime in the last five, some as early as ten years. They've effectively all become blogs.

I have been browsing the W3C ActivityPub (https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/) spec. Basically Twitter/Mastodon, and while there is a inReplyTo field (taking a URI), not really a forum gateway. Sure a post can turn into a tweet or a toot or what have you, and the other direction could be finagled. But that is still not a forum. A forum would focus on the discussion, the topic, the thread, not the individual contributions of the participants.

Haven't seen if there is any meaningful discussion on what a forum gateway should be, how to manage it, and how to convince forum software makers to support this.
