One of the things I have noticed here over modern years has been successive governments encouraging more and more young people to go to university. However a big chunk of those from the lower end do not stick it and others doing degrees in conjured up subjects that mean damn little.

Maybe things are too hot for them over your way Belfrager? :D

The idea of democratize access to universities is a stupid one that only could have the result that it had. An electrician or a plummer wins ten times more than any Economist, Engineer, etc.

I haven't had a job since 1987. I've been self-employed since then. I'd fire me, but then hiring somebody to replace me could be a problem.

I may, at some point, consider a change. After the pattern I'm already familiar with, I will remain an I.C. (That's "Dirty Capitalist" to you, Josh.)

I've been looking over the field, and there is a possibility that I will contract to a different outfit than the one I presently work with. It comes with serious changes though, and it's not to be taken lightly.

Right now, I work in "Turn and burn". I pick up freight here in the Chicago area, then deliver it over thataway, then head back home clean. The pay while loaded isn't shabby-- 1.07 a mile at present-- but I take it in the shorts headed back since dead-head miles don't pay at all.

Then there's the OTR lifestyle that many expedited drivers have. They take a run, and don't get home again for weeks or months at a time. You make more money because there's less dead-head, but the other side of that coin is that you live in the van for that time. I mean, sleeping, eating, watching TV or "working" on the computer, and using truck-stop facilities for basic necessities between runs. At the end of three months on the road, even the relatively huge Sprinter gets a bit small when it's been your "home" for that time period. Expedited has some serious down time too, you can be three days between paying loads. Question: Do you think you can live in a metal container that's 12 feet long by 6 feet wide by 4 feet high when you're not having to share that space with freight? I wonder how the big-rig guys do it, their sleepers aren't noticeably bigger than a van is and they manage to crowd a lot of stuff in those things.

So-- if I decide to make such a change, it's a serious change.

Better to be in jail.
At least, you don't have to keep on paying.

My suggestion, join the Legion Etrangére and live a life of adventure.
In alternative, get yourself a bicycle and just head to the world tour.

As you can see, plenty of options. Besides some rich American widow, probably the best for you. :)

Eh? What don't you understand about what I said? Will repeate it simply.

1. I was asked to appear on television.
2. I was asked by BBC Radio to be interviewed for 10 minutes.
3. I was asked by an independent radio station to be interviewed.

Oh and maybe 4, I was interviewed for a limited circulation book on people. A copy is now in a major non-lending resource library so my place in history is assured! Sorry you were ignored but different leagues mean different results!  :D

At no time did I need to plead it was their initiative.

You're gonna apply or tell us about some interviews having been paid for?;)

RJH misfired, his posts should have gone into the "Geography and Radio" thread. Unless he's saying these stations were trying to contact him for a gig on radio.

(I wonder what that would be like? "The RJHowie Show is on the air, starring RJHowie! Today's show, Scotland's Independence movement!" Oh, boy---- I think maybe I'm glad I don't have satellite radio.)

Eh, Josh?? Why should I try as I did not need to! Can I remind you that twice the BBC invited me and a private radio station as well. In fact a friend has told me that there was a planned television documentary and I had been suggested to be on but in that corner the pro did not go ahead as the director had moved away. So that would have been four! To date the score is me 3 you 0! You tried but got ignored.
