Title: Upcoming Upgrade
Post by: Frenzie on 2016-04-06, 16:41:32
I don't quite now when yet as I'm still working on it, but within the month I'll be switching the forum software from Simple Machines to ElkArte.

I've already ensured we'll keep the features we know and love by porting them over or finding alternatives, like quick quote, bookmarks and first post on every page.

We'll gain a much improved experience on mobile devices, auto-saving drafts for posts, improved password security, as well as @mentions and likes.

When the software switch is done, you'll have to sign in twice to upgrade the safety of your password.

as well as @mentions and likes.

What is that?

as well as @mentions and likes.

What is that?

If I wanted to mention you in a post, @Belfrager, the @ in front of your name will most likely notify you that I mentioned you.
Quite a useful feature that I use a lot on my favorite sports forum site. The "like" bit will probably be like a thumbs up or thumbs down feature, noting our general approval or disapproval of posts, threads, etc. (Poor RJHowie.....  )

Thanks for all of your continued work, @Frenzie.

Likes? I hate likes :furious: My Opera didn't have likes. They had Chuck Norris!

Srsly, likes would ruin the atmosphere. Rest of the things mentioned are okay, if the transition will work glitchlessly.
Title: Likes
Post by: Barulheira on 2016-04-07, 11:26:16
I hoped I would never have to endure a "likesful" social platform. I'm antisocial by nature. That's why I love DnD.
Well... things change, and I am in the minority.
Title: Re: Upcoming Upgrade
Post by: Frenzie on 2016-04-07, 14:31:33
I don't have to enable likes. But otherwise you often just see people posting things like +1 or so true. I think its recent addition to GitHub (https://github.com/blog/2119-add-reactions-to-pull-requests-issues-and-comments) was an improvement.

Behind the scenes the move means it'll be easier moving forward, because all or virtually all of my changes will be hooks-based without any edits in the underlying code.

Edit: hm, searching the settings offers up an "enable likes" option but it doesn't seem to actually show up. We'll see, I might have to fix a bug to disable likes. :P
Title: Re: Upcoming Upgrade
Post by: ersi on 2016-04-07, 15:24:13
We are not like GitHub. We are not looking for the best responses to address bugs. We are like the off-topic section of My Opera. Well, not like; we truly are that. No likes.
Title: Re: Upcoming Upgrade
Post by: Frenzie on 2016-04-07, 15:59:35
The bug was a slightly different one than I thought. Likes have to be explicitly enabled. They're just built in and wouldn't take any extra effort. I could've said last and least to indicate I merely sort of slapped it on at the end of a bunch of much cooler features, but I didn't realize it would be a contentious issue. :)

Only ersi is contending so far, and I've just expressed my feeling on it. Let's wait and see more opinions. :wait:

We run from likes as vampires from crucifixes. We are not facebook, we are the resisting dark forces of the web.
Can we finally burn this theme and got a new one?

Yes, after a few failed attempts....First I wasn't recognized (my name)....then I tried a different approach.....it threw LastPass into a hiss fit.....then I tried the ole fashioned way....copy & paste...geez.....but it worked, but then I retried to duplicate my steps, & I ended up on the ole Forum? (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/hmm.gif)  If I might ask....I know I'm not alone in this wonderment......specifically, in layman's terms please, why the migration/upgrade?

Is this forum not working well as it stands, requiring your drastic intervention/action?

Is it causing grief to you & danger to us that we are all unaware of?  (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/imthinkin6.gif)

If this upgrade were simply transparent, then by all means.

As the 'owner' you can do as you please in the end, but I would like to think we will all benefit from your hard work too. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/hatsoff.gif)

If I might ask....I know I'm not alone in this wonderment......specifically, in layman's terms please, why the migration/upgrade?

Better security, better mobile compatibility without me having to redo practically everything, better extensibility without me having to rewrite in the source making updates harder to apply, the fact that I wanted to create a new theme anyway, etc.

Edit: And I'm sure you're going to love quick edit for when you noticed you made a typo just after posting.

If this upgrade were simply transparent, then by all means.

It is. This isn't like the new Opera forum. ;)

There are some integration hooks available that I don't think were there in SMF, but I haven't really given it any thought.

➤ ➤  Is  Quick Quote  still a work in progress/on the  'to do' list??

Also, are there any other BBCodes/Tags we can use for text formatting in here ..... some of the SM Boards Tags don't work in here, so maybe the nomenclature is different or nonexistent?

Like, for one example, what BBcode .. Tag do we use to insert a video?

It's harder to browse the site with Elinks now. Everything seems to work, but the design is a bit...

For example, can you try out quoting someone's post and then find where it's quoted? I eventually found it, but the form looks overly tiny in Elinks. It should be as large as the Quick Reply hole. This is how it was with the former design.

Where's the "Player" we had in Simple Machines DND & in OPERA, that when clicked played the video right there, could pause right there....you know the one we used:

My two recent posts were from mobile phone, with Dolphin browser and Lightning browser. They identify as Chrome. That sucks.
You can see for yourself that Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 5.1; et-ee; E5603 Build/30.1.A.1.33) AppleWebKit/537.16 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/537.16 Chrome/33.0.0.0 contains no indications to the contrary. ;)
There's currently a little bug in that sticking a footnote at the end of a line eats the newline. You can avoid that by placing a space after your closing /footnote tag.
These left, right and center things will also work as align=left/right/center.
Normally used as /me, not as [me]blabla[/me]
These were added by me.

The font size differences don't look too bad after zooming in a bit. This is how it looks in Dolphin:

And in Lightning:

But still it would be better without the font size differences.

...no indications to the contrary [in the user agent strings].
Right. And this sucks. (Posting this in Lightning.)

Perhaps. I didn't dislike it because the assumption is that you pretty much know what the quoted text says anyway. I made the difference a bit smaller for now.

@Frenzi, when I hover the Quick Quote all I get/see in my status bar is the forum message noting the message number ( https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=2348.msg54174 ).

When I press the button without selecting any text I get the:  Please select some text! message in yellow highlight,, but when I do select any portion of text I want to quick quote, as I did yesterday, nothing.....absolutely nothing happens. It worked perfectly in the old forum yesterday, so somethings changed in here since migration. BTW, when a portion of text is selected & the Quick quote button is pressed, nothing appears in the text edit box down below, & therefore nothing is quoted....naturally the full quote (plain Quote button) works perfectly.

Am I doing something wrong?

Also, the video......all I did was paste the youtube url for the video into the text edit box.....isn't that what you meant I should do? I didn't see anything except the youtube url in preview, so when I posted what I did I just preceded it with some spaces to center it better.

Avatars overlapping text if not using 100% font size.
Should be good now. I upped the avatar size limit to 200px on account of today's bigger resolutions and @midnight raccoon is the only one actually utilizing that.

Am I doing something wrong?
Not that I can tell. Have you tried reloading though? (F5 and/or Ctrl+F5) Like I said in #56 (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=2348.msg54174#msg54174) I fixed up an issue that was affecting only Opera/Presto.

Maybe it was similar to the smiley thing Luxor mentioned? I only enabled video autoembed after fixing up the smileys (but before you reminded me about the missing video BBC).

It's working for me. If it doesn't play then in principle neither should a video-BBC inserted video (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=368.msg53999#msg53999).

Ok....Used FF v45...Video timed out on both Your post & My post whether I single or double clicked the image. It opens at youtube.com  in a new tab ....... if I click the link above the image....Exactly the same results when I used Opera v12.16....exactly.  My Adobe Flash is up to date.

So, to recap....

I can post a video by pasting the url link in a new post via the text editing box on a blank line.

I can not play the video within the post in either a Pale Moon v26 browser, a FireFox 45 browser, or an Opera v12.16 browser......regardless of using a single or double click on the the image I receive a timeout error message within the player/image on all 3 browsers, but when I click on the text above the image (upper left side  Youtube video: ) it immediately opens a new tab & loads the video perfectly at youtube.com on all three(3) browsers.

@Belfrager   Obviously, this forum software, like the previous software by SimpleMachines, uses information detected in your User Agent on your computer/device.  Different browsers & browser tools use different ways of presenting the User Agent information.

I can change my User Agent anytime I wish, & I do so because some sites present their sites differently depending on what they detect from you, & some even go so far as not permitting....being very unfriendly....you depending on the browser & version of it that you use.

Have you ever seen the popup/message that tells you something like:    "Your browser is out of date & we suggest you use XYZ browser or update your browser in order to have the best experience at their website"  ?

That's what I'm talking about....your User Agent is broadcasting to each & every website you visit.

Now, just for shits & giggles, I'm going to change my User Agent to some rediculous browser & configuration that I would never use in a million years to prove my point.

This is what I switched it to:  Epiphany 2.30.0 (OpenBSD)    and the User Agent String is:    Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; OpenBSD arm; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.2  (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/531.2  Epiphany/2.30.0

Well, you do have a custom font-size set. But I changed it back to full size. Actually quote size is one of the first things I originally changed about default SMF, because there it's extra small (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=538198.msg3824744#msg3824744).

@Frenzie    No....same as before...Times out on every browser I try (FF 3 versions, Chrome 2 versions, Qupzilla, Avant, IE, Palemoon, & this go round Otter got Error 99)...does not work on any of my browsers unless I click the upper left link above the image that says YouTube video:, but that opens a new tab, takes me to youtube.com, & there & only there will it play the video.

JFYI.....when I hover the image I do see the proper url to the video. Hope that helps you.

BTW.....I told you the Video Tag works a treat.....perfectly....better than I could have wanted if I didn't know it before (in our old forum), & being it is an old friend, I will gladly use it( all my text formatting menus & buttons for video are populated with it, so not to worry, using it will be easy.....I like that player better too.....not that the one above ever worked so I could compare.  Thanks again for fixing that tag ..... without it I don't know what I'd do.....Thanks again very much!

My next request is the Shadow Tag....,any chance?? ;)

@Frenzie Surely you agree that the user agent string is misplaced. Formerly it was more of a hidden feature under JS accessible by mouseover on the browser icon, right? And the browser icon was there along with other member info away from the post content. That was the right place. Right now it attracts too much undue attention.

Another thing, I would prefer a solid background colour in the theme. Can we have a setting for that? And how about a number of themes to choose from. At the moment we have purple (sry if I'm not seeing right). Additionally, how about b&w and dark?

Would it be okay if I worked out a few of my own CSS tweaks and then suggest to you to apply them? For example I would still like an option to have mostly equal font sizes.

There was never any JS involved. But yes, I already agreed that this is merely how I happen to like it.

I think if I did that, it'd be more fruitful to allow for users to set custom CSS, a bit like the font size setting but with actual CSS.[1] After all, why stop at HTML background images?

Code: [Select]
html{background-image:none}

This option would be fairly limited in terms of both length and allowed characters to prevent possible server and self abuse, while still allowing you to @import anything you like.

Also I just added a dark theme. Hope you like it.[2]

Would it be okay if I worked out a few of my own CSS tweaks and then suggest to you to apply them? For example I would still like an option to have mostly equal font sizes.
I already changed the quote font size to be the same as other text.
Or in current parlance, "cloud" user styles.
Btw, you can also select a different variant of the default theme.

It's very good! Now I can tell whether I am logged in with a graphical browser  Where can I click like?

However, in this theme the font sizes are not equalised.

Edit: I got an idea. Perhaps you can make it so that when the user sets font size in pixels under Look and Layout, the size will apply to all fonts equally, or at least to those within posts. When this setting is untouched, the theme sizes would apply. (Even though I would prefer the themes only to change colours, not font sizes.)

Seems a bit heavy-handed and again something better handled by some form of user CSS. But I commented out the style responsible for smaller quotes in that theme.

One more comment on the dark theme. In mobile mode it seems to be showing recent posts alternately dark and light, while in desktop browser all posts have the same style. Is this intended or accidental?

The idea is of course to change this so that all posts would have the same style in mobile too :)

And another thing. The quickreply hole changes style on mouseover. Changing the borders is quite enough (even though unnecessary, because this change of style is not indicating focus; it only indicates the location of the pointer which I know anyway). I would like it to keep the colours it has when not in mouseover.

I'll give the highlight thing some thought. The important thing is to maintain legibility.

@Frenzie    The FIRST & the SECOND showed an image, & when the play is pressed they play the video. When hovered, I see the youtube URL, & when right clicked I see the Adobe Flash Player Context Menu

The THIRD & the FOURTH showed no image at all (Blue Box), & when the page stopped loading both came up as [glow=black,2,300]TIMED OUT[/glow]. When loading if I right click, I get my Browser context menu, as opposed to an Adobe Flash Player Context Menu. When hovered I see nothing...no youtube URL.   :rip:

On the Highlight Tag thingie....I agree with you on the legibility thing, as I never use my phone or pad, only PC, I can say what I've seen in the past was fine, but then again what those other device users see .... you'd need to use one or get feedback.

Hope that helps  (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cheerskj4.gif)

That means I know what's happening, but I don't know why. You should presumably also get a timeout if you simply browse to http://youtube.com (http://youtube.com) (as opposed to http://www.youtube.com). Normally youtube.com would just silently redirect to www.youtube.com, but it seems that in your case for some reason it does not. I'd suspect an extension like adblock or noscript, except obviously it's happening in all browsers.

@Frenzie    It's not a Extension (addon). I've used 2 browsers to prove this.....Pale Moon v36 (which BTW no longer uses Gecko), &  Firefox v45.

Ive installed them both fresh, & in their full version,  which  I  don't normally use....I always use portable versions if possible for personal & security reasons.

Now, both are pristine, with absolutely no addons (extensions).

When I type in http://youtube.com & enter after about 15 seconds or so I get a timeout....on both....& when I type in & enter http://www.youtube.com it instantaneously opens the youtube website on both.  I've even gone so far as shutting down my firewall completely, & my test results were exactly the same.

I don't know if these tests prove anything new for you, but if it's ok with you, I'd appreciate using the Video Tag for posting videos, as it works perfectly.

I don't know if this causes you any undo security risks, & if it does, well what needs to be done is, as always, remains completely your decision, but if it doesn't cause undo risk, I'd sincerely hope you'd keep the status quo regarding the Video Tag.

The picture is from my parents' garden, not the Keukenhof. Just to prevent any possible confusion. :P

I'm antisocial by nature.
All of us know that, sir.
Title: Footnotes feature
Post by: ersi on 2016-04-24, 18:10:42
It looks like a nice thing to be able to do footnotes in posts, but this interferes with quoting (full quote, not quick quote). Footnotes always appear at the bottom of the post and they look like the last poster's text even when they are quoted from someone else. I have been thinking how to make quoted footnotes really look like quoted and came up with these (mutually exclusive) options.

- Include the quoted footnote at the bottom of the quoted text, not at the bottom of the post. I.e. when between the quote tags, display it just before /quote
- Display the footnote exactly where it appears, but change the tags to small or size=1 instead of footnote when someone makes a full quote.
- Include the footnote at the bottom as it is now, but style it like all other quotes, including the "Quote from:" line.

Those are good suggestions. I'll have a look at it next week.
Title: A note on the Print button
Post by: ersi on 2016-05-08, 08:52:12
Print button displays the entire thread. Which is good.

There are two display options: Text only and Text with images. This is good too.

However, in graphical browsers, even the Text only option displays embedded videos, while otherwise images are not displayed.

Can videos be hidden in Text only option?

(Edit: Fixed some stoopid English.)

Specifically, it's the [video] BBC that isn't disabled. I've added it to my to-do list.
