Title: What have you just bought?
Post by: Banned Member on 2014-01-16, 14:30:40
It may be just now, today, or on this week - if it's something more major than a pack of toilet paper;)

For one, just now I bought a pack of grapefruit juice, 1.5l mineral water, loaf of wheat bread, a pack of cheap coffee (ground)... Some cookies... How is it called? "Sliced dough"? "Layered dough"?:D
That dough - simple - pumped with sugar:)
The juice I have already tasted --  ;D, yummy:))

Earlier this week I bought two new t-shirts and a new button-down shirt. Now I just need to make sure not to wear them around the rats…

Nothing, but they're knaagdieren. That translates as rodents, but literally it means gnawing animals. I suppose nibbling animals might sound somewhat nicer.

Any special tobacco flavor?

One is cognac flavoured and the other is Orange and citrus.

I use cigars. Small.
The most disgusting 'flavourings' seem to have been so far those "cherry" and - the mosr nuke - "peach".
As for other ones, chocolate and apple are no-bad. Anyhow, I prefer fruit to eat, not smoke:lol:

I've tried chocolate flavored cigars, those are pretty decent. ;) But I don't like cherry flavor either. Cherry flavor tastes like cold/flu medicine.

Gnagere in Norwegian. Then again rodent in English, actually Latin, means the same, rodere is to gnaw.

What have you just bought?

I have bought a welcome mat, but don't get any ideas.

Boots on the ground plus slush (rapid weather change) is a dirty combination. This welcome mat is to keep the unwelcome out.

I ordered eight ball-point pens.
What they sent was eighty-four refills. Promptly, and the right make and model.
I phoned them and they said they would send the pens, but not to bother returning the refills.
Today the pens arrived.
Eighty-four of them.

Also, 5 small bottles of "Water from Köln". 3 stinky cheap cigars.

Yes, also it was a bottle of yoghurt and a can of something curdy for breakfast.

Some chicken breast that is destined to be a Thai stir-fry for lunch that no Thai national would recognise.
That is one of the reasons that we are not inviting any Thai nationals to lunch.

Over the past month or so: A new camera to replace an old one. A new printer, the mighty HP 932C finally reached the end-- not because of anything mechanical, it's a driver problem with Windows 8 as like as not--so it's been replaced by the 5530 printer. Odds and ends. Yesterday, had to spend money on car parts, today I'll spend even more on car parts.

Not so much bought as subscribed to. Times Literary Supplement.
When I was an impecunious student, (and believe me I wasn't even slightly pecunious) I had access to the lounges in the Student Union. There I could sit in glorious luxury and read TIME, Punch, New Yorker, TLS, Scientific American, all sorts of newspapers, and scientific and critical magazines of various stripes.
As I became a real person I subscribed to some of them, one by one, and TLS is the latest. There were years when I was so busy that I didn't read any of them, but I kept up my subscriptions.
I think the time is near when most of them won't exist in printed form, or perhaps in any form at all.

I've been to one Aldi store in the US. It was very odd. But you have Aldi North, we have South. Aldi owns Trader Joe's, btw.

Aldi used to be junk, but they have good produce and eggs nowadays. At least over here. I especially go there for bio eggs, herring, redcurrants and strawberries at an amazing price point. They even have some raw milk Comté. Also their asparagus is way cheaper than elsewhere in spring.

Nuts are better at Lidl overall, but for proper Belgian walnuts you need to visit the market in season. Delhaize sells good French walnuts. Lidl and AH sell inferior Californian walnuts only. Aldi only sells deshelled nuts.

Another 4GB RAM for my Sun Blade 2500. It needs registered DDR1 DIMMs that can handle at least 266MHz, with ECC. In other words, server memory. Apparently demand for this particular type has died down so there's plenty on ebay for cheap.
Well, cheap as long as you don't go around looking for 'Sun' in the item description.
Oddly, I've seen only 1GB modules. The machine can take at least 2GB ones, in pairs, up to 8GB per CPU. But that's the documented maximum, if they're anything like, for example, Apple, that's the maximum they actually had hardware to test with but designed it for whatever the standard allows ( examples for that - my 1st generation beige G3 supposedly takes up to 128MB modules. 256MB ones Just Work. iBook G4, supposedly takes modules up to 512MB. A 1GB one Just Works. And my PowerBook G3 has 1GB RAM even though it supposedly maxes out at 512MB. And so on. )
Either way, 8GB will do for the time being.

19 kilos of books at €2/kilo. Two thesauri (Dutch one I wanted & a French Larousse one that happened to be there), collected plays of Vondel, collected poetry of Gaston Burssens, a Duden German dictionary I wanted but couldn't justify the cost, a somewhat random 1920s Frnech novel and a few other books.

All in all a very good haul for my collection of reference works.

The university library sale is the only one I'm aware of that sells books by the kilo. That and the heritage library sale (€1 or €2 for most books) is by far the best source for high-quality books on the cheap. They only happen very infrequently.

But I came here to say that in the nearby future I will have bought this book that came out on December 10: http://www.neerlandistiek.nl/2016/12/echte-literatuur-bedrijven-deed-je-in-de-18e-eeuw-niet-in-het-nederlands/

Did you give it a decent burial?

Today I bought a second Blackview BV6000 (http://www.blackview.hk/blackview-147/). Good boys' phone.

 Yeah! Took the battery to local battery disposal place and tipped the rest in a bin.

I use my (still functioning) electric razor as a window stop. I shave with some cheapish razor implement from Aldi these days.

A 19 CD box set. Average White Band (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average_White_Band#Compilation_albums)- All the Pieces.
Who knew that one of the best funk and R&B bands had it's roots in Scotland, their sound is more something you would associate with Motown.

BT/wired mechanical compact keyboard https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Motospeed-CK62-Bluetooth-wireless-USB-wired-Dual-mode-connect-mechanical-keyboard-61-Keys-RGB-LED-Backlit/32909123728.html

Just got it and typing on it now. The compactness makes it clumsy, even though everything works as long as you have patience to switch some keys temporarily over to arrow and Fx functions and then back. Luckily the visual feedback regarding the switchovers is good.

The idea was to get something with dual connectivity and easy enough to carry around. Perhaps this would have been better https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Motospeed-Bluetooth-Mechanical-Keyboard-Wired-USB-Black-Quick-Respond-Ergonomics-Design-Mechanical-Keyboards-PC-Gaming-Keyboard/32891227246.html

Edit: Mechanical keyboards are still not for me. However, backlit keyboards are very much for me, particularly when the lights are informative. As it is, mechanical keyboards occasionally come with very good backlighting.

Using Delock numpad with an extra Tab key for the first day, it turns out it is more awesome than expected. When NumLk is turned off, the Home, End, Ins, Del, PgUp, PgDn, and arrow functions work out of the box without any extra configuring! This is a suitable supplement to a (very) compact keyboard, if you have lots of number-typing to do.

/me bought an abacus and going to learn multiplication! (Because addition and substraction I learned on weekend.)

I watched the video, grokked the logic, and now practise. Later learn division also.

Note: My abacus is not quite the one pictured in the video. I have a soroban (https://d3h6k4kfl8m9p0.cloudfront.net/stories/wcF8ObeBkb4sNjMQQDxyBA.jpeg) that is missing one bead each side of the beam compared to the pictured abacus.
