Title: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: SmileyFaze on 2013-11-22, 22:18:28
@Frenzie

I was wondering, why is it that whenever I Reply to a post....post a response in a thread....when I post it I get thrown out into the Index Page, rather than remaining at the just entered post to review??

Is there an option that can be chosen, on either my part or yours,
to circumvent this troubling 'feature' ?

Thanks (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cheerskj4.gif)

(https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/ps.gif) ..... On a non-related subject, are all BB Codes available for our use, or must some be turned on/activated by you before we can access them for our forum usage?

I've tried a few from my/a personal list on one of my FireFox toolbars I've used elsewhere that seem inoperative here in this forum/bulletin board.

Thanks again  (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cheerskj4.gif)

Yes there is in your profile > Look And Layout section.
Tick the check box Return to topics after posting by default.

I changed the default, so new users won't have to bother changing this setting. I also changed the quick reply default to "show, on by default".

Here's a list (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Basic_Bulletin_Board_Codes) of supported bbcodes. What kind of bbcodes did you try that are inoperative? I'll point out in advance that I'm not especially fond of embedding video instead of linking to it.

What does those interrogation symbols means?

That I meant to select the exclamation mark and never noticed I accidentally missed by one. :P In the case of Barulheira he doubtless means it as a question. If I were to make a custom theme (NB that's merely a far-off possibility for months from now) I'd actually consider removing those because I don't really see the point and they mostly seem to provide visual clutter. I'm open to different opinions.

Ahh....ok, being your forum, I respect your decision not to include the same or similar formatting (if available) as we had grown accustomed to in the MyOpera Forums for whatever reasons you believe valid.....though this may be disappointing, I respect your decision(s).

The ones I had problems with I've fixed. I was using the MyOpera BB Code Set (old habits die slow), which -- as you know -- utilizes different key expressions.

Code: [Select]
A simple example:

MyOpera        [IMG=IMAGE URL HERE] [/IMG]
vs.
Traditional    [IMG]IMAGE URL HERE[/IMG]

Not too much important, just for curiosity...
When do we stop to be "newbies"? then we turn what?

Opera used to have levels to define stages of membership (I think it was three levels but I may be wrong). But they stopped it, one would be interested to know the reason for that. Personally I don't really see much point in membership levels; one could imagine it being of some use of there were some form of vetting for new members, but there didn't seem to be any vetting in Opera, excepting the obvious such as spam or vulgarity.

As an aside, my signature on Opera refers to "Rebmem from Wessex". Wessex is obvious, but Rebmem was something I chose in a fit of self-depreciation, when I had sufficient posts, declaring myself a Member but a little backwards.

Apparently this feature is surprisingly integrated. I can assign members to a non-post based group and then hide their title, but I can't remove the "Newbie" group. I'll have to look into this further at a later date as I don't see much of a point either.

On the Newbie thing; can you change the number of posts for transition from one level to the next; if so then the numbers could all be 1..... or 1,2,3   ?

I have a problem, at Opera I could select a part of a post and use the Quick Quote function and quote just the part I wanted to reply.

I'm sorry but I'm not realizing how to do it here...
Thanks

Unfortunately that's not available by default. I should be able to implement such functionality without too much effort, although getting it right (with the link to the original comment and everything) might be a tad harder. Rest assured that I am motivated to implement quick quote.

I could probably throw together a serviceable (but not exactly good) Quick Quote UserJS as early as this week if you like, but getting it as default functionality will have to wait.

@string I'm not sure. Perhaps I can leave this problem to Macallan. :devil:

Thank you Frenzie. It's not fundamental, but many people uses to post large posts and, besides, full of BB Code and emoticons that makes confusing to decompose for quoting just the points one wants to comment.

Whenever you have the time and disposition, it would be great. :)

It is ok for me: I've encountered similar markings on some other forums and don't see any troubles at all.

The above quotes were both made using a simple lil[glow=red,2,300] FireFox Custom Button [/glow]I just assembled.

This button when pressed uses 2 individual popup prompts.

The first prompt asks for the 'name of the person you are quoting'.

The second prompt asks for the 'text that you are quoting' .

I manually typed in your name into first prompt, but I could have easily pasted it in there, & the for the text I copied it from the post & pasted it into the second prompt.

The only requirement to use my 'Quick Quote' Button is you need to be using FireFox with the Custom Buttons extension installed. (https://dndsanctuary.eu/imagecache.php?image=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smileys.me.uk%2Fsmileys%2FHappy%2Fhappy0159.gif&hash=a66898d9605c2d2542a17440b9a40ba3" rel="cached" data-hash="a66898d9605c2d2542a17440b9a40ba3" data-warn="External image, click here to view original" data-url="http://www.smileys.me.uk/smileys/Happy/happy0159.gif)

If you don't have FireFox, I'll provide you with the code I assembled (I'm not a programmer, I just copy & paste a bit, use a little smarts, & sometimes -- God willing -- it works --- like this one.)

Maybe you can install it somehow in the browser you use (guessing its OPERA) & maybe it will work for you too.

Hope that helps ya 'till the Cavalry arrives! (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/chuckle002.gif)  Good Luck (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cheerskj4.gif)

Here's the code:

Code: [Select]

var inst = "Add The QUOTES AUTHOR Here:";
var fill = "";
var name = prompt(inst, fill);

var inst = "Add TEXT to QUOTE Here:";
var fill = "";
var pop = prompt(inst, fill);

var box = document.commandDispatcher.focusedElement;
var startPos = box.selectionStart;
var endPos = box.selectionEnd;
var selectionLen = endPos - startPos
var text=box.value.substring(0,startPos);

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

text +="[quote=" + name + "]" + pop + "[/quote]";

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

text +=box.value.substring(endPos, box.value.length);
box.value = text;

box.selectionStart = endPos + text.length;
box.selectionEnd = endPos + text.length + selectionLen;

For basic quick quoting this userscript already works reasonably well (https://files.myopera.com/Frenzie/dnd/dnd.user.js), but I'm still hoping/waiting for permission from xErath.

This may be a matter of preference:
At the forum pages (for instance: "Forum Administration & Future"), the window tab displays the page title correctly, although quite narrow. But the page title doesn't appear clearly anywhere else in the page itself. Sometimes I find myself struggling to find out at what forum I am currently. At the top of the page is displayed simply "DnD Sanctuary", and the forum name is in small characters in the hierarchy line.
Is there a way to display the forum name more clearly?
Thread names are quite OK, I think; they have a special highlighted space for them.

My stance is that browsers without a titlebar are somewhat broken (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/findpost.pl?id=15000642). *grins*

I made a small change in the code; do you think it could work for you this way? (You might have to switch over to the DnD theme if you're using another.) The specific style of the text is a slightly different matter that'll have to be adjusted.

Oh! I had forgotten that I'm using Opera without a titlebar. I enjoyed the extra space I got for the pages... until now.
Your change is good for me... but the whole website theme's base font has almost doubled... Should I switch something here?

Are you experimenting with font sizes Frenzie?
As everything seems to have gone very large here.  ???
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: Frenzie on 2013-11-29, 16:14:07
I am a strong proponent of user choice, and I practice what I preach. I changed the stylesheet so that it better takes the user's font preferences into account. If you think it's too large or too small you can adjust it in Preferences > Web pages > Normal font (assuming Opera/Presto).

The default style actually did a similar thing of sorts, but it redeclared fonts too many times for no good reason, which would make user stylesheets harder to write. Also, it went with merely 78% of the user's choice. On most browsers with default settings that'd be 78% * 16px = 12px, but I strongly believe that setting the font size to 78% of the user's preferred font size is Wrong™. Incidentally, the 78% thing is also the reason fonts are often inexplicably smaller in Firefox on other platforms (Mac, Linux) because of rounding differences. Don't believe those who would tell you that it's a safe value to use.

I realize that if you set your font-size to 12px, that might have unwelcome consequences on sites that use this 78% trick. To avoid that there's the minimum font size setting in Preferences > Advanced > Fonts, although I recommend copious ignoring of idiot designer's styles, whether with Opera or a textual browser like Links 2.

A sign of a well-written stylesheet is also that one tiny CSS rule will do to override all font sizes on the page:
Code: [Select]
html{font-size:12px !important}

Yes I'm quite aware of that.  ;)
But as j7n says that would affect all other pages so that's getting left alone.

If I'm gonna adjust the font size, that would affect all other pages.
That's kind of the point. ;)

I recognize that many sites are broken and for some bizarre reason think they should display text in roughly 78%-80% of a user's chosen font size (Wikipedia goes for 0.8 ). Despite this blatant disrespect for the user, if it's widespread enough I suppose you might argue it becomes "broken" to do the right thing. However, many sites do the right thing, so I don't think that argument quite holds its ground.

At the same time, I like a slightly larger font size. You say it's hard to read sitting close to the screen; I say a smaller font size is harder to read leaning back. :P But of it depends on the monitor in question.

JoshL actually requested I stick a quick font size adjuster in the top right or something. That'd be easy. I could attach some localStorage to something like this:
Code: [Select]
javascript:void(document.documentElement.style.fontSize='12px')

I think that'd probably be the easiest way to satisfy various preferences.

Good idea, then we can set it to the size we individually feel comfortable with.  :)

Okay, first I'll implement something that sets the font size on DOMContentLoaded (after dinner). I'll work on the size up/down links later.

Here's a bookmarklet that'll allow you to preset the fontsize:
Code: [Select]
javascript:(function(){localStorage.fontSize = prompt('Enter font size', getComputedStyle(document.documentElement).getPropertyValue('font-size'))})();

Of course I think it's easier to just apply a user stylesheet as outlined above (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=10.msg649#msg649). :P
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: Frenzie on 2013-11-29, 20:23:04
Alright, if you refresh you'll find that I changed the default size to pixels, for I think it's better to be honest about it if we don't quite respect the user's settings than to back-handedly set the text at 80% of the user's preferred font size.

The bookmarklet in the post above this one is now also functional.

I'll switch font sizing to rem, but as a quick fix I switched it to "smaller". rem works in Fx 3.6+, IE9+, Opera 11.60+, and allegedly also in Chromium, so I figure that should be alright.

Why rem hasn't been in CSS since about the beginning is another one of those great mysteries.

I use the FireFox Extension called[glow=red,2,300] NoSquint[/glow].

NoSquint (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/?src=ss) will remember my zoom settings per site, & revert to default if I don't visit in a user specified period of time.....mine is 3 months.

You can also set the default settings (within the extension) to whatever % you wish. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/thumbs/drinkwine10.gif)

(https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/ps.gif)..... If you disagree with what NoSquint calls a site, a powerful exceptions mechanism lets you split up or group together sites with URL patterns. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/exitstageright.gif)

Still, I have a slight suspicion that some such lists don't currently show all the stuff they should. I mean I used some such "new posts" things (especially those from the 'index' page, alonside with the "from the last visit" one): currently they all have one page, seems ok, but then, when check the sections "manually", I find some lower items with "new" flashies... I don't mind it very much currently - mainly because those sinking topics are not of my interest, but - a peculiarity, say...

In a manner of speaking. GoogleBot probably already mirrored the entire forum by now, but there are also bots visiting from the east:

http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.html
http://help.goo.ne.jp/door/crawlerE.html

Here's the OS stats:
Code: [Select]
Windows		86,318	68.5 %
Linux 29,561 23.4 %
BSD 7,352 5.8 %
Unknown 1,430 1.1 %
Macintosh 1,164 0.9 %
Java Mobile 133 0.1 %
Java 2 0 %

In browsers we have mostly Opera (58.9%), followed by Firefox (18.8%) and Chrome (11.7%), but the stats software probably doesn't distinguish properly between Chrome and Chropera. Then there's a bunch of mobile browsers, a normally fairly marginal browser, Konqueror (1.3%), and IE (0.2%) and Mozilla (0.1%) at the very bottom.

Interestingly, not all Opera browsing happens from version "9.80" (i.e. 10 and up), but a marginal amount happened with 9.64 and 9.23. There's also someone who saw fit to try MSIE 6.0 on the forum.

There are hundreds of user agents......List of User Agent Strings (http://www.useragentstring.com/pages/useragentstring.php)

Firefox has an add-on extension called UserAgent Switcher (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/?src=ss)

This enables any user to masquerade as any browser they please---mask their browser's identity.

There are about half a million Firefox users that have this ability----have this add-on installed.

What browser, spider/bot,  would you have me mimic?

One press of a button.....done. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/exitstageright.gif)

Sure, Opera comes with that functionality built-in to a lesser degree as well, and it's also easy to do using local proxies like Proximodo/Proxomitron and Fiddler. But I hardly think that's reason to doubt most people on this forum are still using Opera/Presto, and that Firefox is the second-most used browser. :)

Never said that, just that anyone can portray any browser they wish, for whatever reason they feel they need/want to.

How many unique visitors pass here each day?

I doubt their numbers would/could ever justify a concern. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/thumbs/good.gif)

Only a conspiracy theorist would see any validity in mass usage for deviant purposes. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/skrewball004.gif)

It says on average 80 per day but I think it might including its rather incomplete stat of "1" unique visitor on December 14. In any case it's something like 80-100 per day over the past two weeks.

Used FireFox v1.0.8 ..... can never get used to non-tabed browsers again. How did we ever live with them???

..... Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.7.13) Gecko/20060410 Firefox/1.0.8

I used the portable version Firefox Portable Legacy v1.0.8 (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/FirefoxPortableLegacy1_1.0.8_English.paf.exe)

Dont see any difference to what I see with the version I am using (Pre-Australishit) now.

If this one (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=23.msg507#msg507) doesn't suffice, some kind of terms and conditions will appear within a month or so. That's about message content, but the same applies to e-mails, encrypted passwords, and IPs.

Elinks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elinks) is a text-based web browser. I use Elink as well as Links 2 and Lynx occasionally. If I recall correctly they all handle certain language-related issues better than graphical browsers, like falling back from ø to oe if ø is not available.

@Frenzie

Might I suggest we have an   [glow=black,2,300]"Introduce Yourself"[/glow]   Sticky Thread in an appropriate Board so newcomers can make their first post (nice if you would suggest that when somebody successfully registers via the success response from [glow=green,2,300]DnD[/glow]), so we can all go there to welcome each & every newcomer.

Nothing breaks the ice better than a shy 'hello I'm a newbie post' (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/thumbs/NEWBIE.gif) ,  followed by a deluge of friendly & warm  welcomes!!!

Makes em feel at home...ya think??

(https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/ps.gif).....I would also like to suggest that if you decide to make such a sticky thread, that we all (us regulars) make a concerted effort to visit this [shadow=grey,right]"Introduce Yourself"[/shadow] thread whenever we sign on....maybe put this thread on our notify, so we get a note saying there were posts there.....just an afterthought.

What do ya think?

Being  [shadow=grey,right]    Lounge  [/shadow]  seems to be all about games, so I think that[shadow=grey,right]   DnD Central   [/shadow]would be more appropriate because it's Branded by the Forum Name, & it denotes the heart of the Forum --- where most people who join up will probably be most active.

You can assign separate moderation/moderators to the boards. I.e., the moderation will differ (the approaches) considering 1) the newcomers and their threads in the DISTINCT 'newcomers' board - and 2) that the moderation in the "settled" boards must be kept "on the full scale", you know? :P

This isn't a question, but I think it needs to be said.

I agree 110%  with the above statement.

We can't be sellin' the place as Friendlyville, where you can sit down, relax, & exchange ideas with friends when they strip search ya at the door, & then insist on a cavity search using a 1936 Buick hood ornament (http://northstargallery.com/cars/car119web.jpg).

Next we'll be sellin' raffle tickets for a chance to win an all expenses paid month at the Molokai Leper Colony (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/last-days-of-a-leper-colony/). (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/BigToothSmile.gif)

All kidding aside, the last thing this budding Forum needs are overbearing levels of rules, regulations, moderation, or lack of transparency. We also don't need any 'NEWBIE Unfriendly' or negative trust issues connected to initial membership.

Hell, a lot of our potential membership will be coming from the MyOPERA forums, & are feeling beat up enough already, they need respect rather than skepticism.

Having a group of firm, but understanding & temperate moderators will easily pacify any 'problem child' if one or two should surface.

The DnD Sanctuary is now, & can continue to be, one of the best damn Forums this side of Friendlyville.......providing we continue to let it be.

You can actually choose a different theme in your settings, although that way you'd lose out on some of the unique features.

If someone writes some custom CSS I could probably find a way to make a child theme with just the CSS file different, although I encourage UserCSS creation and sharing. ;)

I know nothing of Stylish for Chrome. I imagine it should have some kind of function to make a new style for the currently active site.

Also I'm not sure if anything you can do with those filters will be particularly nice looking, but it's the only thing that can be done quickly.

The color change is just a palette I quickly whipped up when Luxor said to me that he likes blue. After working it out a bit, I thought the default just looked so boring. So this is not finished, the colors may change still, etc. but at least it's not the default so we have a bit of a more unique character. I hope you all agree. :)
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator

is just a palette
Yeah, it seems the word...
Anyhow, I acknoledge that changing only one (eg background) colour is not an ultimately excellent idea - as long as we have words and buttons placed upon it. Then/thus we might need a couple or slightly more of combinations of 2-3 main colours here in the question. E.g., a background and the now orange buttons... (Well, we have some white fonts as well - not to forget...)

:) I see, a nationalist thing... you see, it could work (well, with a lot of effort) if you had white, at the same proportion, of blue and orange. There's almost no white.
But you don''t even have real orange... just a sort of brownish-sort-of-orange.

One other thing:

I look at the DnD site quite a bit using a smart phablet (!) and also the nexus 7. I find that whereas in the PC view the delineation between threads is OK, on the smaller screens it becomes a little difficult to see which "last post" icon refers to which subject because the eye can't trace the boundaries between threads that easily across the page. Several times I have selected the wrong one.

I don't think there's such an option by default, but it shouldn't be too hard to throw something together in due time. If we e.g. change the colors for summer (spring is probably a bit too soon) it'd make sense to keep the older colors as an alternative color scheme.

Is it possible to accentuate the "horizontal divisions a bit?

I changed a couple of borders from white to dark gray, although it may not quite integrate with the rest of the layout. How's that?

What kind of bbcodes did you try that are inoperative? I'll point out in advance that I'm not especially fond of embedding video instead of linking to it.

It is a sentiment I sympathise with, but I also realised that this has prevented me from porting culture into this forum (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1820592).

In that thread embedding videos (and conceivably pure audio) is the whole point.

Fair enough. Unfortunately there is no ready-made solution that's similar to the My Opera syntax.
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator

If limiting yourself to Youtube (a significant limit, admittedly) you could do something like Skyscrapercity (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=110980428&postcount=7294), where code like this

Code: [Select]
[youtube]KZFiEhStum[/youtube]

turns into this HTML snippet:
Code: [Select]
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KZFiEhStum8&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KZFiEhStum8&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

That is, just put in the Youtube video in an object (with embed fallback), adding a couple Youtube parametres (https://developers.google.com/youtube/player_parameters), fs=1 and rel=0, fixed size and done.

The My Opera approach is more elaborate and safer (everything redirected to an iframe with domain embed.myopera.com), but as long as the script whitelists the Youtube ids (KZFiEhStum in this case), it should be safe enough. There has to be something like that around.

Whether this is a path worth taking is a different question, but food is delicious.

I'm just not sure if it's a good idea to make one that's so dedicated to a single site in principle. But yes, I can probably implement something like that without too much effort, using the VIDEO name for future purposes but only YouTube support for now. There are various ones that automatically embed if you paste a link like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8y8Yab9vlQ but I think that's just annoying.

My Opera works like this:
Code: [Select]
[VIDEO=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8y8Yab9vlQ width=620 height=375][/VIDEO]

But this forum works like this:
Code: [Select]
[video=620,375]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8y8Yab9vlQ[/video]

or this:
Code: [Select]
[video width=620 height=375]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8y8Yab9vlQ[/video]

I'm not sure why it's internally inconsistent like that. I'm leaning toward implementing the latter. Any preferences?

Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: jax on 2014-02-04, 15:14:28
From a user perspective, probably something as close to:
Code: [Select]
[video user-params]URL[/video]

as possible, it makes it easy to do by hand, copy/paste URL, wrap it in video markup and done (user parametres should be optional, possibly disallowed).

The problem is on the server side. Before I joined Opera (and in the first years thereafter), I was a great fan of the object element, it slices, it dices. Now, not so much. It easily becomes a headache. If you allow a user to insert an object, it could be anything, especially if the parser is lax.

The SkyscraperCity approach (above) is user unfriendly in that the video tag is hidden and it only allows the poster to enter a Youtube ID, which I haven't checked, but seems to match [a-zA-Z0-9_-] with a typical length of 10 characters (would be reasonable to assume 6-16 characters). Anything else wouldn't be a Youtube ID. However they have several different URL syntaxes for the same ID. A script could be friendly to allow URL syntaxes, but only if they explicitly follow those syntaxes. As you may remember My Opera only allows one (the old v=...), and not the one that Google promotes for sharing.

So I would either recommend to use an existing script that is regularly checked for exploits by competent people, or use one which allows as little as possible (and only safe strings).

The actual range of URLs from which a YouTube ID will be successfully extracted is a bit larger and more forgiving. For instance, it'll also work without any protocol or without www, but let's call that undocumented functionality. ;)
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: jax on 2014-02-05, 21:49:54
Better than My Opera (which breaks on https:). Relative/absolute URLs are no security issue (assuming your expectation of what a relative URL will resolve to isn't completely out of kilter), everything is based on resolved absolute URLs anyway.

As long as no untowards code can be injected in the published code, it's OK.
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: Frenzie on 2014-02-06, 11:45:43
Since characters &, ", and > are explicitly excluded , the worst that should be able to happen is that someone posts a video that doesn't actually work. Like you said the alternative is to explicitly include certain characters only, along the lines of [a-zA-Z0-9_-]{6,16}, but I figure that's less future proof.

Some other potentially useful options:

My Opera supports several others I've never heard of.
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: jax on 2014-02-06, 12:50:49
I think it is always a healthier approach to whitelist (list what you allow) rather than blacklist (list what you don't allow). Future proof in my book is to proof against future exploits, not to proof against future syntax changes. Both will come, but the former is more devastating. (OTOH the latter could be more work intensive if there is a lot of syntax changes). As long as the next script in the chain knows what it can get from the previous and behaves appropriately, it should work out, but if what it can expect is anything, there could be a lot of things to consider.

E.g. the null byte \0 terminates strings, is a syntax error in XML, and in HTML as well. There is a class of exploits appending \0 where you don't expect it, e.g. inside an URL. With a little luck it could interrupt the script parsing the URL and dump the rest of the string after \0 unchanged.  This is probably OK, but what about the next exploit we haven't thought of?
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator

As an aside, \w is the same as a-zA-Z0-9_. So if your description of YouTube IDs is correct, it'd suffice (although be potentially less clear) to write [\w-]{6,16}.

Anyway, the Simple Machines people seem to consider the automatic encoding and such sufficiently secure. That is, there seems little point in having the video code more secure than the image code, although I do like the suggested change to the regex.

Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator

Video in itself should be safe, at least on the weekdays Adobe Flash don't have an exploit. The 'video' tag should thus be safer than 'iframe' which should be safer than 'object' (which is usually implemented as iframe++). (In principle 'video' shouldn't be worse than 'img') All these tags are safe in themselves (unless you mind that they are enabling a GET request outside your domain, but then again, so does [img]), but the scope for trouble if something goes wrong is greater.
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: Frenzie on 2014-02-06, 14:47:44
Just to be clear, the iframe is constructed as
Code: [Select]
<iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/>>>extracted YouTube ID goes here<<<">

The img is constructed as
Code: [Select]
<img src="basically anything that starts with http(s)://">

In both cases something like urlencode (http://php.net/manual/en/function.urlencode.php) is used to further secure the entered data.

Anyway, what I mean is that unless I'm mistaken, either YouTube will 404 or you'll have "><script>evilFunction();</script> regardless of whether someone tried to use IMG or VIDEO. That being said, I'll exchange the relevant part of the regex with [\w-]{6,16} just in case.

Any opinions on Vimeo or other sites?

@Frenzie

Just for our (my) information, what is the actual impact/breakdown on the system for say a {video}{/video} tagged  3mb youtube video in one of our posts?

Does the system get bagged for the 3mb video, just the size of the visible image, or both?

Also, what is the forum performance impact, if any?

Naturally the tagging uses different brackets, but as you know the actual tag can't be displayed outside of a CODE tag.

In both cases there's a bunch of JS, a Flash player, and a screenshot. So at least the first time it should use something like three to five times as much bandwidth as a simple screenshot, but I imagine every part of that except the differing screenshot will be cached.

I was just talking about playing the video. :) Vimeo uses more CPU for me.

Also, what is the forum performance impact, if any?

Probably negligible.

When I open the forum's home page I can see that I have unread posts at, for example, DnD Central. So, I open DnD Central to see the threads with new posts.
Imagine that I read just half of threads with new posts and return to home page. I have no more indication of new posts at threads inside DnD Central.

Shouldn't the warning of unread posts to maintain while all the unread posts are read?

Maybe I misunderstand, but I don't think there is any difference. In D&D we, or at least I, came via bookmark straight into D&D. Here in DnD I come in 1 level up, equivalent to coming in at the level of Forums in My Opera. If I bookmarked DnD Central it would be the same as My Opera.

I would imagine that most of us here have rubbed up someone the wrong way at one time or other. I'm sure I'm doing it now.

But that's what we are, a bunch of individuals, each with lots of funny (odd) ideas, that argue with each other on one thread and agree with each other on another.

We just had an "incident" where I as a moderator considered having a private chat with a couple of people here. One the aforementioned Josh, the other-- one of the administrators here, who was behaving in that thread like a mischievous 7-year-old. They both needed to be sent to "time-out" chairs, in my never-to-be-humble opinion.

I can't place my cursor in between at least the last 5 ones (except that I'm on zoom, and there's actually no "in-between" between two of them). I can seemingly push the cursor slightly between the first five - but only moving it from beneath.

Title: Unmoderated section
Post by: ersi on 2014-07-29, 05:12:49
I'm still under some shock for the banning of one of our most active members. I came up with this suggestion:

Maybe create a separate section in the Test forum where banned members would still have access. So, banning would not be really banning, but restricting the member from posting and messaging except for the specific subsection.

The purpose of the section would be for the banned member to vent safely apart from others and for the moderators to monitor the member's behaviour until the interaction seems tolerably human again and the member can be allowed to return.
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator

I disagree.
Such measure would create two classes of members, members of first class and members of second class that are "paying" for their previous actions.
Or, at another perspective, having a kind of a virtual jail here.
Everyone should be a member with full rights posting wherever they want. Either that or nothing.

People are adverted before being banned and have the opportunity to change. If they don't, a ban it's a ban. Dura lex sed lex.
I suppose there are temporary bans. If someone desires to return and follow the guidelines this time I think that it will be not denied.

Two questions.

1. Somewhere along the way, thread post numbering has turned up. When the thread displays the first post on every page, the first post is numbered differently on every page. Wouldn't a proper solution be to leave the first post unnumbered (or hide numbering in it)?

2. The IRC command /me seems to work nicely, I just noticed. Are there any other handles that work this way? Is it possible to add '/msg nick' to emulate the whisper function as it was in Opera forums?

What's the problem with "bluring lines" Frenzie?

Laissez faire laissez passer. No need for preemptive measures. You don't want to emulate an American government, do you? :)

I remember just one case at the old D&D when someone got irritated with that whispering thingy.
"Potential moderating issues" are not a reason at a free community.

I must say that I never sent a "whisper" to no one (that I can remember) but I always answered to "whispers".

Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator

Wouldn't a "Whisper" included in a post remain a more relevant & symbolic bond to the whisperer & the whispered to,  more-so than an unlinked & probably deleted PM?

As far as 'the needs of moderation' --- there will always be a risk of abuse, but if my own past practices are at all evident of the probability, I would have to submit it shouldn't be a realistic concern. Regardless of the heat of debate, I never received nor made an abusive "whisper".

For some reason unknown, but appreciated, "whispering" did not contain the caustic retorts that open debate sometimes brought to bear.

"Potential moderating issues" are not a reason at a free community.

The problem with blurring lines is perhaps primarily technical, but there are definite implications for privacy. PMs are private, but to what extent would we expect whispers to be? For example, all moderators have the right to edit posts, rarely exercised in practice. Perhaps these aren't "potential moderating issues" so much as "potential privacy issues involving moderators (and administrators)."

As I said, it's not too much important to me but reasons to deny it should be well-founded.

The unspoken aspect is first and foremost, why do I want to spend my time on this? Implementing a basic whisper tag probably wouldn't take too much time, but there are several complications like quoting and moderator editing. Even though I have significantly more spare time at the moment than back in April and May, I'd probably rather spend it reading Moby Dick and brushing up my French. :)

I'm picking this up a bit late (whispering) but some interesting comments there. SF's remark about whispering is true in my experience - it was always more polite, possibly because it is at a closer level of intimacy than are the more anonymous open posts.

I must confess I used to enjoy whispering, it added a little bit of spice sometimes and a little clarity in others if one was afraid of someone taking a robust reply as a personal attack.

I think also think Frenzie's comment about it potentially blurring the line between privacy and moderation is a good one and particularly his remark about it taking up time.

Perhaps one way would be to have a policy of Moderators only reviewing whispers if the recipient of the whisper reported it. That would reduce the work overload to practically zero and act as a brake on miss-use of the facility while allowing it to continue without undue concern about privacy unless one was intent on bad behaviour.

Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: string on 2014-08-13, 14:33:05
On two other matters.

Another way of approaching the post number thing is to have posts numbered within a thread, if this software will allow that. It has it's advantages for reference.

On the subject of anonymous users accessing DnD, it might be an idea (if it can be done) to

o  have people register before they can read the forum
or
o  have access, without registration, to the first page only of any  thread

It may be, if we have some non-registered users using DnD, this might encourage them to join us.

That behavior would also be the most straightforward to implement. Only showing the whisper to the intended recipient(s) in regular post display is simple enough in principle; practice might throw up some unexpected obstacles. However, anyone with the ability to edit a post (i.e. the poster and any moderators) will be able to see the entire content of a post while editing.

o  have access, without registration, to the first page only of any  thread

I've come across that a few times. I'm more inclined to close the page than to register.

In my opinion it is reasonable that mods/admins can read and change whispers. They relate to the thread in question, much of the time anyway, and within their domain of responsibility. Also it was useful when modifying posts. The sensored part was put in a whisper with no recipients, which meant that only somebody with editing rights (the author and the mods) could see the whisper. That meant that we could have a manual trace record of what had been going on. If the post had merely been edited or deleted, the original content would be lost, which would make it harder to determine e.g. if someone really should have been banned.

I've been thinking about that whisper thing (that seems to me a curious ethical problem) and I disagree with you.

If people asks for the whisper function (as I said before, to me it's indifferent if we have it or not) it's because they feel the need for a multi level kind of communication.
At the same time - not having to send a pm - they want to make a public and also a private statement directed to someone in particular, not the rest.

If it's private, there's no place for "moderation". Moderated whisper it's an "half whisper", something no one asked for.

Now you tell me, ohh but they can be whispering terrorist things and the sort. Yes, they can, it's a price that respect for privacy a free forum has to pay.

You evoke "domain of responsibility". Simple, make a disclaimer.

That resumes my vision about it.

An advantage of a whisper is that it is available at the time that its recipient is reading the post about which you are whispering; as in;

[whisper]I know my post is not what I wrote to you before about Men being no good at cooking, but since Putin came out as a transvestite things have changed a lot[/whisper]

I have to admit it's disturbing to know that others may read the whisper but [whisper] just between you, me and the moderator[/whisper] this is not a problem with the normal posts and unless one thinks that whispers are for corrupt and outrageous secret messages having international repercussions, I don't actually see a difference

Beginning a month or so ago, I don't have the Quick Reply form open any more. It used to be open by default, but now it's closed. To open it it requires JS which I don't have in Elinks. Now I can only reply via Reply and Quote options. Or by using a JS-enabled browser.

On some other forum I saw a cool option to download specific threads. Remembering that we had to vacuum up My Opera forums, is there a way to do it to these forums when some doom begins to approach? Is there a way to download parts of the forum as per interest? Specifically

- the posts of a specific thread?
- the posts of a specific user?
- the posts of a subforum?
- and all posts, not stats or other pages?

And if these are possible, what kind of format is it? Plain text? HTML like online? HTML as a single page?

Indeed, I never looked at this before. Looks like it does what I wanted, even though it seems to omit the admin board.

Thanks :)

I normally access this forum by https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?action=unread and this shows the admin board too.

I meant this (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;sa=topics;u=14) (you can choose between messages, topics and attachments), but I just realized it shows topics you started rather than topics you posted in. But the new replies thing is usually probably more useful regardless.
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: ersi on 2014-11-06, 17:33:55
Nah, looks like action=unreadreplies only shows threads I haven't visited. As soon as I go there, they disappear from the list, so it's not a true history of threads where I posted.

Another question. At Manjaro forum (also powered by Simple Machines) there's action=recenttopics that gives the list of most recently active topics. This seems not available at our forum. Is it possible to activate it?

I suspect it's custom-made, similar to how I put together a few things like the quick quote, the video bb tag and the (clearly slightly broken for ELinks) browser/OS display. There's a mod that adds the functionality, but it hasn't been updated in years and it's incompatible with release versions of 2.0.x.
Title: Re: Questions to the Administrator
Post by: ersi on 2014-12-14, 17:10:56

...(clearly slightly broken for ELinks) browser/OS display.

Elinks says, among other things, this: "Use " " if you don't want any User-Agent header to be sent at all. URI rewriting rules may still include parameters that reveal you are using ELinks." This should mean if you have a good script, it should be able to identify Elinks even if I have not set the user agent string at all.

Anyway, I think I altered my user agent string in Elinks at some point from whatever it was by default into: ELinks/%v (textmode; %s)

%v is supposed to expand into Elinks version and %s into opsys. I dropped some other things it wanted to reveal, and maybe rearranged the parentheses, not sure.

An embarrassing thing, but I have forgotten my password for this site. I cannot change it, because the change requires email address. The email address I registered with was opera.com, now defunct. I cannot change my email address in the profile, because to change it I have to give the password...

I am able to log in only by taking care of precious cookies in all the browsers I use. It may work indefinitely, but who knows. Is it possible to recover my password? I think that whatever my password was, I would like to keep it :)

You can do it with bbCode like this:

(https://dndsanctuary.eu/imagecache.php?image=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.everymac.com%2Fimages%2Fcpu_pictures%2Fapple_imac.jpg&hash=1fedb618a9b9b6068f3c680150ae9339" rel="cached" data-hash="1fedb618a9b9b6068f3c680150ae9339" data-warn="External image, click here to view original" data-url="http://www.everymac.com/images/cpu_pictures/apple_imac.jpg)

Or you can just use regular HTML:

Code: [Select]
<img src="http://www.everymac.com/images/cpu_pictures/apple_imac.jpg" alt="Mac thing">

<img src="http://www.everymac.com/images/cpu_pictures/apple_imac.jpg" alt="Mac thing">

The "alternatively" is what I have done until now. The problem with it is that it looks pas chique.

I tried a few syntaxes, aiming to produce the URL as the embedded link and the name as the link text. This would be chique. But evidently not working, and from what you are saying, looks like not intended to work either.

Quote from: http://daringfireball.net/2015/04/watch_apple_watch

This is also no cool. The best would be the name as the link text and the URL embedded.

Many details I like and some I dislike with Skyscrapercity (https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/world-population-in-extreme-poverty-absolute) as forum software. It's a heavily customised vBulletin.

One, which is gone now it seems, was a view over liked posts. I don't think it is worth the cognitive overhead to bookmark posts, but there is a great overlap between posts I like and posts I would like to return to one day. Sure, there can be some interesting posts I don't like and posts I like that have no lasting value, but most would be both. It leads to more honest liking as well, I like this because I think will have lasting value to me, not merely that it amused me or that the poster is nice.

Not worth the overhead though, particularly not with active bookmarks.

While not technically thread title only, if you tick "Search in topic subjects only" in advanced options I think it's close enough to be useful, and probably more useful in most cases unless you happen to know the exact title.

Unfortunately right at the end of March I learned that my landlord had decided to renovate the entire apartment building. The same thing happened the last two times I had to move as well! :( Luckily this time around I was in a position to buy, because this is getting ridiculous. I explicitly asked back in 2020 when I had to move for the same reason and they said they had no plans to do any such thing.

I just found a place a few days ago and my offer was accepted, but it'll probably be on the back burner for a bit longer.

I'm at the new much much better place, but apparently setting up the internet is really complicated. They hooked up the fiber on 23 September, at which date it was supposed to be activated. Unfortunately they still haven't managed to fix some underlying street issue…

Luckily I could borrow a 4g modem from work[1] so I can still work from home three days a week as usual.
70 GB volume, not a lot, but my phone only has 12 GB

My guess is by July, perhaps as early as June.
I still think July or early August would've been perfectly possible if there hadn't been annoyingly weird complications but oh well, we made it in the nick time. We purchased on the 21st and moved on the 26th.
