DnD Central / I Feel Old…
…after watching this video.

Admittedly, the phone I grew up with during the first 10-12 years of my life or so was already practically an antique when I was born.

Otter Browser Forum / Get involved in Otter
Otter is in an exciting formative stage and is teeming with ideas to emulate and surpass Opera 12's familiar functionality. You can find out more about the development and the issues which are current on this GitHub page.

If you wish to contribute to the discussions, please start a thread here, including the issue # and exactly the same title to assist tracking of comments on the issue between DnD and Otter. By all means start a discussion on other issues that you think relevant to Otter. Note that information and ideas posted in this Ping are for free use by the Otter development.

DnD Central / Minimalism
Are we too materialistic? The author of this article seems to think so: http://markmanson.net/minimalism

I am gravitating greatly toward more "minimalism" in two areas in particular: sitting and footwear. That guy mentions needing two pairs of shoes. I say shoes be damned. Also, besides the occasional book I seldom buy anything. However, not being wasteful is obviously not minimalism.

Where do you get decent stools, anyway?

DnD Central / Do Something

Quote
The more time goes on, the more I realize that success in anything is tied less to knowledge or talent, and tied more to action supplemented by knowledge and talent. You can become successful at something without knowing what you’re doing. You can become successful at something without having much particular talent at it. But you can never become successful at anything without taking action. Ever.

I constantly have to remind myself to do much this, although I'd put it in the framework of perfectionism rather than procrastination. Technically not doing something is procrastinating, but the reason is that I instinctively think it's not worth doing if I'm not going to be doing it very, very well indeed. But many things merely need to be good enough.

The Lounge / Random Picture
This might be worth a try. The rules are simple: post a nice random picture or illustration.

I'll start with one for jax: the year of the horse.

Forum Administration / Logo
We have been kindly provided a choice of logo by a professional graphics designer. If you could all indicate your top two choices, we should be able to reach a decision. In the unlikely event of a tie, I reserve the right to decide which I like best. Click the thumbnails to enlarge the images. Voting closes in ten days.

Hobbies & Entertainment / The Longest Journey
Anybody like this game or any other adventure games? I finally got around to playing both TLJ and Dreamfall. TLJ's definitely a classic. As for Dreamfall…  the story was alright and the visuals were pretty great, but the gameplay was somewhat disappointing with a slew of mechanics that were boring at best and frustrating at worst. Also, it took me a while to get it to work on Windows 7 with the stupid copyright protection. For the €1.50 I paid for it that was sort of acceptable, but otherwise… urgh, DRM is the worst.

Forum Administration / New URL
Thanks to generous donations by others within the DnD Administration, I've acquired the domain name https://dndsanctuary.eu. I'll probably make the switch sometime tomorrow. It should be uneventful, but at least a few minutes of downtime are to be expected.

Browsers & Technology / The best browser of 2013
If I missed any, leave a comment. I believe JoshL said I should be able to add 'em to the poll without losing any existing votes.

Some background that might inform your vote:

  • Chromium forked Webkit and called it Blink. Google claims to have a bigger commitment to not breaking the web with a gazillion -webkit- prefixes.

  • Elinks didn't really change anything, but you don't change a winning team.

  • Firefox removed features like an easy Javascript toggle, small icons mode, and other customization options.

  • Internet Explorer 11 is the best yet, including vastly improved developer tools.

  • Netsurf 3 adds support for user CSS, improved text selection, a more native appearance, and more.

  • Opera switched from Presto to Chromium/Blink. It vastly improved on Chromium's speeddial alternative, although not on Opera's own speeddial, and allegedly improved website compatibility. It lost almost all customization ability in the process, but now has access to Chromium's vast extension catalog.

Browsers & Technology / Unison File Synchronizer
For several years now, I've been using Unison to have access to all the files I might need on all devices where I might need them. Thanks to today's HDD capacities, I can have all my important files on my netbook available without an Internet connection, and due to the duplication it's also a backup in case my desktop HDD ever has any issues.  Before HDDs reached this size, I used to be more selective about my synchronization, synchronizing e.g. only documents past and present while excluding music or photographs.

Anyway, if you're looking for a good way to synchronize significantly more data than Dropbox offers, or just to do it without sticking anything in the so-called cloud, especially on an American server, Unison might be just what you're looking for.

DnD Central / FAQ
Why are the fonts so large?
I believe that users should be able to choose their default font size, and browsers universally choose a default of 16px. In case you don't want to change your user preferred font size because other sites disrespect it, there's a setting available in the looks and appearances area of the profile.

Why don't you have a better quick quote?
It'll take some time; please be patient.

Is there a manual?
Why yes, there is. View it here.

I came from My Opera. What are the differences?
There are fewer differences than on a vanilla Simple Machines installation. The first post is displayed on every page of a forum thread, but this can be disabled in your profile. My Bookmarks is the equivalent to My Opera's subscription manager, but e-mails use a separate mechanism. So if you want to keep track of a particular thread without receiving e-mails, click Add Bookmark. If you want to receive e-mails about updates to a particular thread, click Notify.

I forgot, what are the rules?
There's a link to the T&C in the navigation bar on top.

The Lounge / Strange Pets
I know there's psychic cats and such, but we've got two rats here. I gave them the stale butt of a loaf of bread to see what they thought and it turns out they love it almost as much as e.g. banana or avocado. Nibbles (the dominant one) gets all possessive and doesn't want Chompers to even touch the stale bread. What kind of odd things do your pets like or do?

Browsers & Technology / My Opera Backup
As most of you know, I'm currently running a Python script with the intent of backing up all of the My Opera forums, or at least about as close to it as possible.

I already shared a few hundred thousand posts using My Opera itself, but obviously that would be self-defeating. I considered torrents. They have many advantages, not least of which is that the more popular they are the faster they (ought to) go. But it would be more likely to be a constant drain on my Internet volume, which is currently limited to a minuscule 100GB. (I can make do with it, and I don't want to pay more.) I don't think the ISPs here understand that even buying a game on Steam these days might use up 100GB within a half hour.

Anyway, the best solution seems to be sharing it all on Wuala. Downloading all the files should be easy through the Opera Links panel, or some equivalent extension on another browser. Sharing it from this very server is also an option, but in the unlikely case that there's a lot of interest I figure it's better to have it elsewhere.

Download backup files from Wuala

I won't share too much until I've done a data integrity check and some pruning. These initial files are mostly to (hopefully) get someone interested in processing the available data in some way. To that end, I penned down a few suggestions.

Some technical information: 3,331,270 items, totalling 4.7 GB.
