Files' properties.

How do you customise file's properties in your XP  ???

The hard button? The real touchable one at the hinge, I meant ???

This is a desktop computer, not a laptop.

I need that the "switch the damn machine off" button opens THE THREE-BUTTON MENU rather than - EVER - just shut the machine down... Without any confirmation asked from me!..

I can't tell you about Win8. I didn't have the pleasure to meet the beast as yet :)
As for Win7 you are confronted with  a button menu offering 6 options: to shut down the system, to change user, to log out, to lock the system, for a new start or to spare power
In case of emergency you can also pull the power cable :)

@Frenzie
He probably meant this one: ;)

Browsers & Technology / Re: After XP — OS alternatives for Samsung NP?

I made the jump from a machine that ran XP Media Center Edition (based on XP Pro but with a few more "toys") to this machine which runs Windows 8, and am at a loss to figure what the problem was "having to learn Windows again".

Well, it depends on what one understands by 'learn Windows' ;)

I knew xp because I've worked with computers with xp on them and had kind of knowledge about Vista because I helped some friends to set it up.
Private, I made the jump from w2k to win7 and it took me a few days until I 'learned' how to configure win7 according to my needs and according to my concept of how the OS should perform. (uninstalling some MS and others trash, disabling unneeded services, hardening the system/network and so on)
BTW, Windows Explorer in win7 is an impertinence but there are alternatives for this peace of crap.

Of course, without any personal needs or concept of how the OS should perform I could have started to use win7 as it was, right out of the box, immediately.
In that case you don't have to 'learn' anything about the OS you are using and you don't need any understanding for how the OS performs.

@Josh

I don't think it makes sense to upgrade your XP because you probably won't have much joy with Win7 (or even less with Win8) and your old hardware.

@Frenzie

I had w2k before but no XP. However your link made me curious.

EMET v4 needs Microsoft .NET Framework v4. How poetic.

Indeed poetic :)   At this point I stopped reading on.
Install a risky framework so you can harden better your system ;)

The .Net Framework might ease the life of programmers at some cost. This cost in form of an additionally risk has to be payed by the user.

Reminds me of Java which gets praised by many programmers because it works on all platforms.
It's like saying anal sex is good because it works on all genders.

DnD Central / Re: Grammatical Mutterings

I also had some issues asking for Sprudelwasser at this one restaurant. I wasn't then aware that the term in the south was Tafelwasser, but that hardly seems like a reason to immediately start speaking English to me.

Sprudelwasser means Sodawasser.
Tafelwasser means potable water enriched with some ingredients.
Mineralwasser means mineral water.

In this case I have some understanding for the waiter/waitress. Since he/she has noticed that you aren't a native he/she wonted to make sure, you get the right drink. Hope, you got it at last :D

Hobbies & Entertainment / Re: Food
Right, I mean the wood barrel one. This is totally Estonian (or German if you wish).

I wouldn't call it neither Estonian nor German. It's simply the original and best tasting. Anything else is a cheap knock off.
You'll get served that  cheap knock off even in German restaurants.
I can't tell about restaurants for billionaires though.

Hobbies & Entertainment / Re: Food

Still, I vastly prefer the Estonian variety (must be close to German) over Russian.

As far as I can tell, the big difference lies in the way the suerkraut was fermented, industrially or naturally matured in wood barrels.
You hardly can find the naturally matured one at the supermarket ;)

DnD Central / Re: Grammatical Mutterings

My country is highly literate and small enough so that dialect differences should be non-existent, ...

Dialect differences in Germany can be extreme, to a point where a Saxon won't understand a Bavarian or vice versa :D

Speaking of dialects, best wishes from Bavaria :)

Ois Guade zuam nein Jahr!

BTW,
Frenzie could exercise his Bavarian with the online translater: http://www.respekt-empire.de/Translator/?page=translateEngine
It's not perfect but gives you an idea at least ;)

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Otter Browser
Is it fast on Windows?

It seems to be slightly faster than Opera Presto. However I've only tested with scripting disabled and only on a few pages.
One of the most interesting things for me is to see how modular the final product will look like.

The GUI is fast and responsive, at least on my Win7.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Otter Browser

I gave Otter a quick try in a virtual XP. It's surprisingly functional and fast already, but there doesn't seem to be any attempt at implementing customization yet.

At this early stage it's hard to make predictions. So far it's lightweight and seems to be fast.
More customization options will come for sure.
Might be worth to keep an eye on this project.

Browsers & Technology / Re: The best browser of 2013

I suppose I could use Opera 12 with the Tor network but I don't know how to do it.

I use Tor once in a blue moon. However, using Opera with Tor is easy.

  • Download and install the Expert Bundle.

  • Start Tor.

  • In Opera's manual proxy configuration enable SOCKS.

  • Proxy server: 127.0.0.1; Port: 9050

  • In Opera's Preference Editor enable "Use Remote SOCKS DNS Lookups"

That's it.
Additional recommendations:
Disable in Opera all Plug-ins (opera:plugins) and disable JavaScript (F12)
Open a new private Tab and close the non private one(s).

DnD Central / Re: Grammatical Mutterings
Okay, that's a bit out there, because I've met plenty of Germans who certainly speak with the case system in full attire.

Those who don't are usually immigrants of the first generation, no matter for how many decades they are living in Germany.
The case system is not something a native has to learn at school. He/she grows up with the language in his/her ears. Even an illiterate will use the case system when speaking. Only thing he/she can't is to read and write. Mismatches of cases or genders will simply hurt his/her ears :)
Local dialects are a different story but not related to mismatches of cases or genders.
Same applies for germanised words. E.g: "Ich war auf einer Party. Da habe ich einen coolen Drink getrunken."

DnD Central / Re: Grammatical Mutterings

Ach, was für ein süßer Hase.

She probably said "ein", but I'm not so sure she said süßer. :P (Of course it's hard to say seeing how it was sometime between '05 and '07.)

"ein" = (masculine) indefinite article, e.g. "ein süßer Mann" (der Mann)
"ein" = (neuter) indefinite article, e.g. "ein süßes Kind" (das Kind)
"eine" = (always feminine)  indefinite article, e.g. "eine süße Frau" (die Frau)
"süß" being the basic form of the adjective

There is no such combination as "ein süße". This is a mismatch between genders.

Less Than 20 Per Cent Of Users Like Firefox's New Australis UI

To add insult to injury, it’s already possible to download an add-on called “Classic Theme Restorer” that transforms the UI back to its classic look.

I looked shortly at Nightly 28 Alpha 1 Pre. You still can toggle JavaScript, Cookies or Proxies from about:config.
I suppose that it's only a matter of time till according extensions will permit to do it through customized buttons too.

Right now I'm using FirefoxESR 24.2.0 as my secondary browser and will stick with the ESR channel as long as I'll use Firefox.

Regarding your poll, I only looked at Firefox and Chropera. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as 'the best of 2013' for me.
The first might not be as crappy as the latter but over time the sequence might change  :o

DnD Central / Re: Re: The Problem with Atheism

Incidentally, Germans don't seem to care too much about the difference between a hare and a rabbit. "Ach, was für eine süße Hase," a German girl once said about my pet bunny.

hare, bunny = der Hase, (diminutive) das Häschen
female hare = die Häsin
rabbit = das Kaninchen
male rabbit = der Rammler

In German there is no Osterkaninchen. It's always "der Osterhase".

The correct spelling:
Ach, was für ein süßer Hase.
Ach, was für ein süßes Häschen.
Ach, was für eine süße Häsin. (barely used)
Ach, was für ein süßes Kaninchen.

As for children growing up in a town it's hard to make the difference between a hare and a rabbit. In cartoons they all look the same :)

I'm afraid we manage to hijack the thread or at least we are doing our best :P

DnD Central / Re: Re: The Problem with Atheism
"the dove took her food from the gutter" and I'm like "but how do you know it's a female dove;

In German: die Taube - feminine noun, independent of the dove's gender
Diese Taube ist sehr zahm. Sie frisst mir aus der Hand.
In case you know it's a cock pigeon:
der Täuberich - masculine noun
Dieser Täuberich ist sehr zahm. Er frisst mir aus der Hand.
other examples:
das Pferd - neuter noun. You don't know the gender of the horse.
Dieses Pferd ist besonders schön. Es gefällt mir. Usually, "das Pferd gefällt mir".
In case you know it is a male: der Hengst. Er gefällt mir.
In case you know it is a female: die Stute. Sie gefällt mir.
or
die Katze - feminine noun,  independent of the cat's gender = sie
In case you know it is a male: der Kater = er
or
der Hund - masculine noun, independent of the dog's gender = er
In case you know it is a female: die Hündin = sie
In case you know it is a male: der Rüde = er

What if you don't know? :P

Then a. will apply. You don't say: Gib es etwas zu essen.

Quote from: Frenzie
"Dat meisje ziet er hongerig uit. Geef haar wat te eten." Still, I think that might be acceptable in spoken German?

Not only acceptable but also correct.
Whilst "das Mädchen is a neuter noun, we refer to the gender of the person which in this case is feminine.
c. Gib ihr etwas zu essen.

Der, die, das
macht für Fremde
wenig Spaß  :)
1472
DnD Central / Re: Re: The Problem with Atheism

That's not necessarily any different from "it".

Except we have 3 genders: er, sie and es.
Der Mann ging einkaufen. Er kam mit einem neuen Hut nach Hause/nachhause.
Die Frau ging einkaufen. Sie kam mit einem neuen Hut nach Hause/nachhause.
Das Mädchen ging einkaufen. Es kam mit einem neuen Hut nach Hause/nachhause.
or more usually because of her gender
Sie kam mit einem neuen Hut nach Hause/nachhause.

But it becomes even more complicated:
The child looks hungry; give it food.
Das Kind scheint Hunger zu haben.
a, b, and c are correct answers.
a. Gib dem Kind etwas zu essen.
b. Gib ihm etwas zu essen. (if it's a boy)
c. Gib ihr etwas zu essen. (if it's a girl)

In case of an undefined subject We use "es"
Es regnet. Es schneit. Es donnert. Es blitzt. Es wird kälter. Es kann noch dicker kommen. Es mag schon sein ...  Es ist vorbei.
