It used to be that hats were regular for all sorts of working folks including security guards, railway staff, bus drivers. Ties were a a standard thing and bad enough that odd MP's turn up without them but on tv politicians in discussion doing the same. Makes them look untidy and daft. Beards everywhere another thing and my mother used to get annoyed at that rushing into as she felt it showed them as not being very bright and hiding behind them as if showed maturity! :o
You have been holding on pretty well with your hats and ties then. Once upon a time Britain the Great managed to turn this

into this
(https://s3.amazonaws.com/quietus_production/images/articles/26699/the_beatles_1561392384_crop_550x369.jpg)
which is an astonishing feat, even though it lasted only temporarily and degenerated into this (https://i.pinimg.com/236x/b4/ab/7f/b4ab7f51f2e07fd30aa5b2dd00ad32f0--with-the-beatles-psychedelic-rock.jpg).
Where I live, snob etiquetteurettes scoff at holding hands in pockets. In this particular aspect GB is not looking too good.

He is always smart looking. But on tv you often see a news announcer involving a member of staff on a news item with the tie of. The general trend these days in the areas I have mentioned have been a decline in appearance whether bus drivers, rail staff, security people and so on. Oh and beards are a another passing nonsense and Goebbels would be clapping his hands if here today at how people can be brained into sloppiness and such things. I started wearing a tie at around 7 and before my primary school adopted a uniform. Wear one every day (!).

Indeed, wearing a tie and a uniform simply looks great. :)

Would go well in nutjobland over the pond. Society has become a tramp like farce and you never here public statements from the traditional adult groups getting them off or youth organisations. Oh and I should have emphasised the added beard rubbish. My mother felt very strongly it made men look weak and I will proudly not jump onto daft things and admire my tie rack as well as keeping a shaver handy!
And a of these dashed beards look horrible and far from artistic or classy at all. It is a modern mess that easy minds can get pleased at rather than look proper. Beards make a man automatically? - Unsmart rubbish!

There's a long history of hats here as there. Both in practical application and as a class or status symbol. I assume you're worried with the latter.

Eh, you can do it right. keep it short and trimmed up.

Most beards I see look maintained.
I still have a negative thing on beards and that they look yeuchy and been a growth due to minds being taken over by control freak mindsets! Was pleased that my late mother disliked them and thought they were a sign of weakness in we men anda makeshift attempt by manhood to think they would be more confident with such. Fully agreed with her view that they were not a bonus but a weird way of trying to cover lack of confidence (!).I keep my ties and occasionally wear a proper hat and not be influenced by control freaks.

Young modern control freaks using beards
Santa style.
Typical modern rubbish and the beard hiding lack of confidence.
Typical modern rubbish
Rjhowie my friend those guys in the photo are ZZTop, a well known rock'n roll band.
If you call them "modern" I'm afraid we must consider you still at pré-historic ages.
There's nothing modern about those two, go listen to LaGrange and shake your head rjhowie.
Let the good times roll. :hat:
I prefer a short, well-trimmed beard. Most unfortunately, I’ve recently had to shave it so that the N95 mask I wear at work will operate properly.
Also the thought of our dear resident Unionist Scot dressing up in a suit and tie to have a supper of beans on toast is highly amusing. Lol
No doubt he has an aperitif’ of Diet Irn Bru beforehand.
Diet Irn Bru? Heavens a Yank getting something right?! I stand by my view that beards are a sign of weakness in personality and such wearers think it makes them seem mature males. A load of cobblers of course. Ensure I wear a tie daily, shave and re the outside situation have a neat cap with an extension on the front as added weather protection - apart from the marching season when of course I have a bowler hat. 8)

You forget, I’ve been to the UK several times now. As a matter of fact, some relatives got back from the UK 3 weeks ago and brought back a favorite British delicacy of mine; Jaffa Cakes!
Haven’t had an Irn Bru in two years. Must do so again when I journey back over there after this madness has passed. Scotland, Belgium and Germany are on my list next go ‘round.
Ireland too if I have the time.

They've changed the recipe and it seems like a lot of folk don't like the taste of it now. Couldn't say for myself as I never drink the stuff.
Well Southern laddie Irn Bru is particularly popular here in Scotland. Don't do much myself on soft drinks and on a very odd occasion if decide on Irn Bru always take the lighter version. Will be good if you include Gt Britain again on a tour.
My only dashed sigh of relief on all this daft beard nonsense is that I glad women don't have them when I give them a kiss........
I guess that depends on grooming habits and where you... I mean hats!
I like to wear all kinds of hats. Not often talked about, I like tipping my hats and other hat gesturing. Why settle for just class when you can have style too.
I have two hats and a bowler for certain occasions. As for beards I do not need those damn things to show I am about!
Relating hats and similars two things that irritates me the most:
- People wearing hats inside the home, that's a lack of education.
- Those hoods that rappers and idiotic youth uses all the time.
I was certain I had posted this, but it was probably on the old Opera forum.
CHAIRMAN: ...Which brings us once again to the urgent realisation of just how much there is still left to own. Item six on the agenda: the meaning of life. Now, uh, Harry, you've had some thoughts on this.
HARRY: That's right. Yeah, I've had a team working on this over the past few weeks, and, uh, what we've come up with can be reduced to two fundamental concepts. One: people are not wearing enough hats. Two: matter is energy. In the universe, there are many energy fields which we cannot normally perceive. Some energies have a spiritual source which act upon a person's soul. However, this soul does not exist ab initio, as orthodox Christianity teaches. It has to be brought into existence by a process of guided self-observation. However, this is rarely achieved, owing to man's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia.
[pause]
BERT: What was that about hats, again?
HARRY: Oh, uh, people aren't wearing enough.
You do have a point Belfrager on when hats should be worn. We have a politician here in Great Britain George Galloway (makes me groan) and is the chairman on an RT programme called Sputnik. He wears a damn trilby style hat on the programme. I think when people do that they don't use their grey cells properly and there was an African leader think it was who used to do that. If wore inside my house I would of course throw him out!
an RT programme called Sputnik
Oh. Here only Russians watch that crap. But westwards it must be a significant bunch who would otherwise be ordinary westerners, thinking it is somehow alternative and independent. This explains a lot.
Rather Yankee influenced answer there ersi. I am not impressed with that British failed politician on Sputnik but there have been interesting other progs on RT which one can suss out and we must simply be brained by the West and US propaganda then?!
Proper edicate depends on the hat, I suppose. Like situations not all are so formal.
Take your hat off at the dinner table. And when you ask a lady to dance. Those seem universal. Wearing one indoors isn't taboo with friends/family. But, it'll set you apart as someone with sense when you're a guest to less familiar folks. If they're wearing hats, though, you don't wanna linger on the point.
Most folk I have known in life would on visiting routinely take their hat off. One while in charge of a uniformed youth organisation there was a squad of boys being noisy after lights out and a younger leader sent to shut them up had an issue getting 100% reaction so when he reported back to me I went down the corridor and threw the squad bedroom open. They went quiet due to being me and I tore into them. As a passing amusement I had put my tie on my pyjamas and finished my warning which I knew would be noted telling about what would happen in the morning. Outside I paused for a moment and one teenage boy I could hear muttering "Ge the captain was wearing his official tie on his pyjamas!"
I bought a Fedora in London back in 2018. From time to time, I’ll wear it. Oftentimes I will get questioned by coworkers if I’m trying to show how cultured I am what with having studied in the UK, when I wear it to work from time to time. Highly amusing for me.
Normally I’ll just wear my standard Ole Miss Colonel Rebel cap to antagonize the Alabama and MS State fans here in Oxford.
Well you stick to your good ole tradition Southern laddie and the next time I pass my picture of General Lee on a bedroom wall will tell him about you of course. 8)
Having been a wearer of a black gown twice a month I had to mentally groan at anyone turning up in a damn beard but fairly I still treated them fairly (!). As a wee boy I was taken when my mother and been niggled by beard wearers and I instantly took to her view that they were a sign of weakness in a male. They culprits just gt brained into that thing and seem to think makes them look more manly. Does zilch and I have stuck with my late mother's direct view and the delusion men have of that unshaven laziness.
Having been a wearer of hats, quite often in fact, I can say people do go in with preconceptions based on the hat you're wearing. But my love affair with hats goes way back. Takes me back, in fact, to when my mom used to tell me "You better put a hat on so your face don't get burned" [sic], and I did not... And my face did get fiery red. You might say I too had been niggled. And then I realized sometimes things have purpose. But wearing a hat just became a habit over time. Sure as I had my shoes done up and my top button undone - I had my hat. And then I realized sometimes you might just do things cause you like it.
All cause momma asked me put that hat on, I've been a better man.
Even people here in Gt Britain who normally wore hats like postmen, railway staff, shop security people and so on don't wear any now. I have two very nice black caps with a slight peak over the top of the eyes and I think originally came from early last century. Years ago I went on a holiday to the ex-colones across the pond and passingly bout a baseball style cap with a form of yellow braid on the front bit above the eyes and on the front attractive words saying "captain." ;)
Sports hats are the most fun. I call it 'The Hat Game' on vacation. People will treat you different if they think you're not a local. I've always been fascinated by how much people go by what's on my hat. Probably speaks to how much what's written on theirs defines them. It's fun to wear my Tennessee hat one day and <local team> hat the next just to see the difference.
I've got the most compliments from women for an Alabama hat around these parts. If you ever find yourself in Dixie wanting one of them sweet southern belle kisses, take note. Scotsman in a Bama hat - they don't stand a chance.
A friend of mine over in the USA move to Tennessee couple of years back (got to know him via his site!) so think il query him to see if he has a hat!
Fashion has all gone downhill since the Bronze Age (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Gold_Hat).

Reminds me of Rincewind.
I actually own a traditional black bowler hat but bought a new one as my older one was getting slightly frayed. Worn on special public occasions.
jax's hat looks even less comfy than the pope's tiara.
Take it that is your pal eh?
