Otter Browser Forum / Re: Site problem with Opera and Otter.

@rhubarbpieguy, it's hard to determine now what exactly caused that issue, let me know if it will resurface in future, then we could try to find out what it was. ;-)

Unfortunately, I'm back as the problem has recurred.  It has broadened, as in addition to linuxfromscratch.org, I've been unable to access rolandgarros.com and other sites.  Unfortunately, the problems are sporadic.  I can access those sites at times.

But in every case I've been able to access the problem site with Firefox and test-qtwebkit.  I contacted my ISP with zero success.  So, as the common thread seems to be Opera/Otter, I'm back.

I've done nothing new to my box to my knowledge but obviously can't exclude an error on my part.  I'm still on Linux Opera 12.16 but upgraded to Otter 0.9.06 beta 6.

Good news/bad news.  The good news is I can now access linuxfromscratch.org with Opera and Otter.  The bad news is I don't know how I fixed the problem.

I basically reinstalled my OS and programs, which I do periodically anyway.  Both Opera and Otter brought up linuxfromscratch.org straight away.  It seems the problem wasn't with either my Opera or Otter programs or their respective parameters.

That only one site caused me problems makes little sense to me, but what do I know?  I'm tempted to add [SOLVED] to the Subject line but as I don't understand the solution ...  Bottom line, it appears this was a rhubarbpieguy, and not an Otter problem.

I'm using no custom settings to my knowledge.  I now assume I must have made some change to Tools/Preferences.  But I made zero changes to my Otter settings.  I simply built Otter with cmake and attempted to access linuxfromscratch.org.

I'm afraid I'm guilty of a badly-thought-out post.  It's just that I assumed it was an Opera problem as Firefox works and when I noticed Otter presented the same situation ...  linuxfromscratch.org is the only site I can't access which is strange.

Otter Browser Forum / Site problem with Opera and Otter.
For about a month I've been unable to access linuxfromscratch.org.  I receive "Connection closed by remote server."  I've visited that site for years with Opera and can still access it with other browsers.

I assumed this to be an Opera problem and reported the site with "Report a Site Problem..." without success.  However, I find I also cannot access linuxfromscratch.org with Otter 0.9.06-dev.  I receive a blank screen only.

I'm posting this not to report a site problem, but to suggest perhaps Otter is carrying over something from Opera it should not.  I assume linuxfromscratch.org made a change not liked by Opera.  However, it apparently doesn't faze other browsers and perhaps Otter should be in that camp.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: "Should I stay or should I go?"

OK, now I have very mixed feelings about this:
https://vivaldi.com/#Home
It had to be expected, but at least someone from their team could try to contact me earlier, and warn about these plans (as they were aware of this project for a year).

I tend to agree.  Not contacting you seems bad form.  I admire your concept and effort.  I've been impressed by your responsiveness to suggestions.

I can't really address the "stay or go" question.  However, should access keys and such be incorporated into Otter, I'll choose Otter over Vivaldi.  Open source trumps closed in my book and I do admire the project.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Allow windows instead of tabs?
Typing a link through F2, or left-clicking a link produces the same result.  To make certain we're on the same page I'm attaching screen shots of Opera and Otter accessing ibm.com.  I've found no combinations in Tools/Preferences ... that omits the tab I see in OtterTab.jpg.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Allow windows instead of tabs?

You are looking for Open new windows in a new tab instead, just toggle it off.
But apparently it was broken until now, so you will have to compile from source...

I'd tried that.  Checking or unchecking that option gives me a tab.  I'm running Otter 0.9.05-dev compiled with cmake.

I realize tabbed browsing is popular and should certainly be available.  I'm surely the minority, but to me, a tab just wastes screen space.  Perhaps I'm not understanding the Tools/Preferences ... options?

Otter Browser Forum / Allow windows instead of tabs?
Can I configure Otter without tabs?  I have "Reuse current tab" checked in General/Preferences and it works, but I want no tab at all.  Opera has "Allow windows instead of tabs" under "Additional tab options ..."

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Otter 0.9.01

@Frenzie, @rhubarbpieguy, if it would be separate property then it could be set manually in XBEL file.
But we could also go for some kind of marker (but that's less obvious and more "magic", in bad way).

I don't understand manually setting files as I currently manually edit my menu.ini file.  New bookmark properties could make that unnecessary.  By right-clicking a bookmark's properties, two new options, perhaps "Specificy Letter" and "Make Letter Persistent" would appear.  A user could optionally determine which access key letter he wants for a bookmark and if he wants that letter to not change when new bookmarks are added.

But perhaps I don't understand what you're saying and again, I'm certain it's more complicated than I realize.  It's rather easy for me to suggest "do this" or "do that."

The thing I do feel rather strongly about is wasting letters on Bookmark Page... and Manage Bookmarks...  I understand why Opera specifies a letter currently as it's inertia.  Menu options always specificy hot keys.  But by wasting letters on Bookmark Page... and Manage Bookmarks... Opera shoots itself in both feet with a high-caliber weapon.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Otter 0.9.01

In case of bookmarks there was some discussion elsewhere which concluded that it could be a good idea to somehow let user to specify which letter it should be.

Yes, I started that thread.  I thought the letter would be automatically assigned, but through properties, a user could change or make permanent the letter.  That would eliminate the need to manually edit menu.ini.  However, I realize that may be more complicated than I realize and there are many ways to do things.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Otter 0.9.01

@rhubarbpieguy, "no menu bar [Alt key] "? What do you mean exactly?
I guess that we will need to force access letters, using & to mark them.

As an example, I can't enter [Alt F] to bring up the File menu.  File is just File in Otter, Edit is just Edit, etc.  I can click on File and the menu appears, but I can't [Alt F] or use the Alt key with any letter.

Bookmarks access key function

Do you mean that dialog for opening bookmark by keyword? It should be added soon.

I'm uncertain it's a dialog, but it's the same as above.  I have no underlined letter.  I just added IBM as my only bookmark.  It shows, but should appear as IBM and I should be able to hit "I" as an access key to open the bookmark.  It displays as IBM and "I" does nothing.  I was quite pleased to see in the release notes that bookmark functions are improved.  Perhaps this hasn't yet been added to the UI.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Otter 0.9.01
I have no menu bar [Alt key] nor Bookmarks access key function.  No access letters are underlined.  Should that be?

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Single-key shortcuts and bookmarks menu items suggestion.
Automatically-generated access keys make sense to me.  I simply have the two suggestions:

1.) Don't assign access key letters to Bookmark Page... or Manage Bookmarks...
2.) Allow me to change, or make permanent, the letter assigned to an access key.  Perhaps an option could be available in a bookmark's Properties.

I realize the second suggestion might be problematic.  However, the first seems a no brainer.  Assigning letters to Bookmark Page... and Manage Bookmarks... makes zero sense to me.  But what do I know?

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Single-key shortcuts and bookmarks menu items suggestion.
Wonderful.  I do have a related suggestion.  I'd like the ability to code a bookmark letter as permanent.  As an example, I have a Tennis folder.  Currently, if I add a bookmark Tennis might be replaced with Tennis.

I'd like the ability to have Tennis to always be Tennis, regardless of what new bookmarks are added.  When I encounter the problem with Opera I usually change the new bookmark to begin with "z_."  That is a clunky workaround, but it'd be better to just make the "T" in Tennis off limits.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Single-key shortcuts and bookmarks menu items suggestion.
OK, but Manage Bookmarks... functions differently than Bookmarks from the Menu Bar.  To access Bookmarks I enter [Alt b], however, simply hitting "b" or "m" as a single key activates Bookmark Page... or Manage Bookmarks...

I've attached a workaround (bookmarks_menu.txt) I've used for years.  It should be renamed bookmarks_menu.ini and put in .opera/menu.  Bookmarks then displays Bookmark Page... and Manage Bookmarks...  "Enter" bookmarks a page as Bookmark Page... is highlighted.  "." activates Manage Bookmarks...

No wasted letters.  Problem solved, but it'd be better to not have to utilize a workaround.

Otter Browser Forum / Single-key shortcuts and bookmarks menu items suggestion.
I very much like Opera's single-key shortcuts.  But In Otter, please don't assign single-key letters to Bookmark page ... , Manage bookmarks ..., or any menu options.

Opera does so, which has a negative cascading effect on bookmarks for which I'd like to assign a unique letter.  For example, I can't build a Baseball folder if "B" is taken by Bookmark page ...  Assigning letters to the menu options defeats the purpose of assigning letters I want to bookmarks.  And I use the menu options quite seldom relative to the bookmarks.

I realize this isn't currently done, but as Otter is in development I'd hate to see it carried over.  It seems now is the time to make the suggestion.

Otter Browser Forum / Re: Otter Tips and Tricks
I built "z" for back and "x" for forward but neither responds.  Is there an option to enable single-key shortcuts I'm not seeing?  My guess is the problem is elsewhere as my back and forward arrows don't work either.
