Not exactly Oakdale, in the Iberian Peninsula the Caliphates were the final phase of Muslim presence, when former powerful Kingdoms were split into many small states ruled by local lords, the "Khalifas". Many of them fighted ones against the others and even made alliances with the Christian kingdoms.
Portugal had already turned independent from Leon and defeated the Moors when that hapened at today's Spanish southern areas, the Al Andaluz. We never had caliphates at our territory.
Both Portugal and Spain are proud of our Muslim heritage at culture, art, poetry, philosophy, science, architecture, food, life style, etc, that makes us absolutely unique amongst Europeans.
