Title: Ted Talks
Post by: Jimbro3738 on 2014-02-24, 14:40:05
I've been checking into Ted Talks (TT) for some years because I find them stimulating and informative, not that I always agree with what I find. Their appropriateness in DnD comes from the fact that they are perfect for stimulating discussion given that not everybody is going to agree with they present.

I ran into the following TT offering about the media this morning.
Jeff Skoll: My journey into movies that matter (http://Jeff Skoll: My journey into movies that matter)

You'll find more topics at http://www.ted.com/ (http://www.ted.com/)

Enjoy.

It is interesting. Of real interest is the fact is that it features a speaker from outside the core of poverty addressing others outside that core.

It reminds me that we have members who agree with her 100% that one of the biggest problems with wealth distribution is that it favors the wealthy. Hardly surprising since this is the group that sets the agenda. And it isn't something that just happens in the US. Surely, there's no poverty in Germany!
Quote
Templin, Germany - The immaculate appearance of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's hometown, with its medieval city walls and well-kept market square, belies a real problem.

The unemployment rate in Templin and the surrounding region, an hour's train ride north of Berlin, stands at 14 percent - among the highest in the country, and more than twice the percentage nationwide.

The UK?
Quote
Today 33 per cent of the UK population suffers from multiple deprivation — it was 14 per cent in 1983, and over 30 million people (almost half the population) are suffering some degree of financial insecurity. These are just some of the stark findings from the largest and most authoritative study of poverty and deprivation ever conducted in the UK.

The US?
Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) — Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream.

As somebody who has never known poverty, I find that hard to believe although I do have one close family member who has lived in poverty. He went years without working, and lived in a car for some time, unbeknownst to me until I learned about it years later.

I don't like and I don't see "Ted talks".
More, I'm very suspicious about such propaganda.

Those irritating "Ted talks" are nothing but manipulation and propaganda to make naive souls to believe that the world is full of "innovation" and similar bullshit.

Really! What a surprise coming from a brother of rjhowie.

At any rate, I like the Ted Talks episode on why it's advisable to remove Portugal from the EU. The premise of the video is that Portugal is an economic anchor, not a sail.

"Ferocious capitalism"?
Capitalism is an economic model. Working economic model.
Moreover, socialists, trying to oppose with an "alternative model", are simply unaware that they oppose to the very existence of economy in general - which one is incompatible physically with the "socialist model" (aka "Christian model", by the way).

This is what His Holiness is talking about:

A single individual is enough for hope to exist, and that individual can be you, says His Holiness Pope Francis in this searing TED Talk delivered directly from Vatican City. In a hopeful message to people of all faiths, to those who have power as well as those who don't, the spiritual leader provides illuminating commentary on the world as we currently find it and calls for equality, solidarity and tenderness to prevail. "Let us help each other, all together, to remember that the 'other' is not a statistic, or a number," he says. "We all need each other."

As we say here, pearls to pigs...
