DnD Central / Re: Why trains don't catch on here in the "ex-colonies".

At the end of it all I'd still rather have my own ride. Takes me straight to where I wanna go, passengers ride free and I get to pick who. How much time that takes is irrelevant if time isn't important. Still takes less planning than figuring out public transit time tables if it did. I can easily avg 130-145kmh (80-90mph) on the interstate anyway. That's not that fast and I still pass buses.
You put your finger on out there, a train only takes you where you want to go if you want to go to a train station.

Perhaps a better business model would be for train companies to expand into the bus & taxi & hire & bicycle markets, so you could buy your ticket to go to your actual destination. That means enormous flexibility in scheduling, maybe a possibility with today's systems.

DnD Central / Re: FIFA World Cups
Well I don't know about me winning, but I think Football/ Soccer is better off now that at last the prosecution of wrong-doings in FIFA are systematically being exposed.

The set up, suggested by some, seems to have been the awarding of large amounts of development funds to countries with little footballing infrastructure via the football representatives of those countries who then siphoned off their own bung. This seems to have been done by some members of the executive committee with apparent aquiescence by Blatter who could then rely on those same representatives for his own re-election.

I've written a number of times that I've not seen accusations of direct involvement in criminality levelled at Blatter himself but it's rather obvious that he should have known about such things and the charges now against him are, I think, to do with miss-governance. It is claimed, by the way, that his FIFA salary amounts to 7m$/year, or maybe It was 7m€ or 7m£ --- whatever!

One hopes that the next President of FIFA will be untainted and can do the job properly. If not I think many will get on his case.

DnD Central / Re: FIFA World Cups
There has been a twist in the FIFA Saga with a couple of bits of not exactly unexpected news

Blatter is reported to have stated that the awarding of the 2018 World Cup to Russia was prearranged.
Sepp Blatter: Russia 2018 World Cup 'agreed before vote'

The English FA certainly didn't:
Fifa crisis: We want our £21 million back over Russia 2018 World Cup fix, says FA chief Greg Dyke
and it appears that there is serious talk of suing FIFA by the FA. If they do the other bidders may well do also methinks.

Apparently, according to Blatter, the award of the 2022 World Cup was meant to be rearranged in favour of the USA, but there was a last minute switch to Qatar,
Blatter: US was agreed host for 2022 World Cup

Noting that the Swiss Authorities are examining the process for FIFA's decisions on those two World Cups, we can expect a certain amount of dirty washing to be exposed.

The following is an account of Blatter's interview with Tass, the Russian News Agency. This is what Blatter said:
Quote
In 2010 we had a discussion of the World Cup and then we went to a double decision. For the World Cups it was agreed that we go to Russia because it’s never been in Russia, eastern Europe, and for 2022 we go back to America.

I bet Putin just loved those remarks

There is a lot of self-justification going on in that interview, and a lot of blame being distributed to everyone but Blatter himself. Read ther rest for yourselves.

DnD Central / Re: Jumping over the Rubicon

has refused to allow a democratically elected Goverment-in-waiting to form a Government

Nope, he refused to nominate those that lost the elections and very well he did. He nominated the winning coaligation as he is forced to do acording the constitution.

Anyway the president is an idiot and English reporters total imbeciles, as clearly shown.
As for English readers, I let you to define them.
Thanks for the correction - I was not certain, hence the cautious "It would appear that".

We have the best imbeciles!

It's British, not English by the way.

The "System", "Upper Interests"

Worth a new thread methinks - go for it.

I explained what was different about FIFA, whether what happened in FIFA is widespread is pure speculation. Cynicism is all very entertaining, but without evidence not convincing.

FIFA affects the lives of far more people than does Volkswagen by the way and those who enjoy football expect better than has been the case.

DnD Central / Re: FIFA World Cups
There are bad apples everywhere of course. What has made FIFA different is the seeming tolerance by the top executives to corruption and the incompetence of its governance.

Quote from: ensbb3

After watching Russian dash-cam footage I've convinced myself people around here aren't so bad at driving.

I'd  have to agree with you although other nationalities come close. If you ever tried to drive in Istanbul you would think Russian lane-keeping discipline a model of safe driving. My experience there is that the way round a roundabout depends on
A.  Which is the shortest route to the exit you want
and
B.   Did you hit the horn before the competing drivers

DnD Central / Re: Gun Control - Should Ordinary Citizens Own, Carry, & Use Firearms?

It's predicted that this trend will continue even amidst the actions of the occasional mad man, or the rancorous protest from RJ & his ignorant cohorts on the gun-hating left.

It's been suggested that there's a strong correlation between taking lead out of gasoline and crime rates going down (including murder).

It has also been suggested (I just did I it) that there is a strong correlation between putting lead (figuratively speaking) into human beings and those dying of gunshot wounds.

Browsers & Technology / Re: Windows Frustration Thread
As a matter of interest, what version of Windows do you use and do you have, potentially, the same update problems and need to do them from a security viewpoint.

I mentioned RiscOS; the last machine I had running that was a Risc PC. I also had a Windows emulation on that, which I thought a perfect compromise between Windows compatibility with Work things and my Hobby fumblings.

You mentioned Word.  Some time ago I bought Windows Office. When I installed W10 on my desktop top, the first time I tried to use that program the W10 system told me that my Word was terribly old and tried to download and install the latest version. As it happened I knew it was earmarked to be a subscription service so did not do it. After all how sophisticated do you have to get to write a letter or use a spreadsheet.

Apple PS? - No I stay away from the navel gazing Apple stuff, excepting this machine which I got courtesy of credit card points.

DnD Central / Re: Crazy Drivers.

I always show a superior indiference for drivers.
Sees them no different from chauffeurs. A chauffeur uses to dress better, that's the only difference.
My wife drove us to our morning coffee shop today.

Not being of the suicidal persuasion, I would not dare take that approach.

Browsers & Technology / Re: Windows Frustration Thread
I have a similar problem at the moment. I normally use a desktop at home using W10 upgraded from W7. I have fast internet there but here, where I am now in Mallorca, I don't have plumbed in internet in the apartment we stay in, relying on our neighbours WiFi that they let us use. They have "unlimited" contract but it's not that fast and there is always the fair use criteria to consider so I use it sparingly, not looking at videos and not getting updates or downloads unless I visit my daughter who has even slower internet, but I'm not so embarrassed at using it for an hour or two.

In Mallorca I use an UP net book, running W7, or at least that's  what I want.

But a couple of weeks ago my netbook OS decided all on its own to download W10. Such a process is slow and bandwidth  consuming. In short I have had to stop using the netbook and have to wait until I get home to sort it. It looks like I will have to install W10 and then revert back to W7 to end up where I want to be. So I tried to do that at my daughter's  but the upgrade collapsed after 8 hours due to the low internet speed and I've  given up doing it here.

I would use W10 in order to keep up with the mainstream were it not for this daft updating regime they are imposing.

DnD Central / Re: Open-access Linguistics

the last exam of PHD is to  make a new theory ( make a Scientific Journal ) .
Cmiiw .

and Afaik , not all New Theory is Worldwidely accepted .

notsure too about that , since there is no PHD in my country .
but in here , PHD is equal with S3 / Doctoral .

It varies, not just between countries but also between Universities and within those between Departments. So it would be a rare person who could even start to generalise. Some have exams and coursework as part of the process, some rely on examination by academics of standing of the work that's been done and the student is largely left to find his own path with occasional advice from his supervisor. The ability to do that is, actually, part of what one learns.

DnD Central / Re: Open-access Linguistics

a PHD .

so what Theory will you make as dissertation ?

I'm not sure I understand the question, but my academic passion lies in applying new technology to Middle Dutch literature. I hardly have a subject at the moment, let alone an actual doctoral proposal. The article I'm somehow failing to write is a slight reworking and minor extension of my thesis, but perhaps the failure is rather an indication that I need a little time off from what has been a major component of my life this past year.

To be sure there is no misunderstanding, does that mean that doing this forum is taking up so much of your time that it is damaging your prospects, and that you'd like at least a break from it, maybe even stop it?

Your future is more important than our "gargling" (copyright bel) so don't hesitate to say exactly what you want.

All the best

@FTL too would work too!

Yes - we do need an international agreement to ban weapons in Space (naturally except for handguns!); There is more than enough litter up there without adding radioactive litter and debris from in-orbit launches.

DnD Central / Re: Today's Good News

How is this a good news for you personally? Are you planning to be among the first settlers?

Course not, the good news for him are that he was payed for working for the Russians. He calls it a "cooperative program".

I was not working for The Russians but ESA which means that for part of the time, Portugal, having become a member of ESA in Nov 2000, you, Belfgrager, were paying some of my wages.

Thank you

DnD Central / Re: Today's Good News
The space project I was involved with was part of the overarching ISS effort, so NASA was also invoked, so I was working with the US as well as well as other countries.

Yes I have personal interest but the real message for all is that the cooperation is still continuing. That must surely be good for all.

At the moment there seems to be a danger of a new Space Race. If it happened it would be very destructive, these projects being so expensive and so prone to duplication of technology and facilities.
