Not a lot of "creative juice" here… Not a lot of neologistic mojo, either.
But just the titles are bad. The topics are often good, as are many of the comments. (Of course, as is usual, most comments are insipid or worse.) But they aren't -those good topics, the good comments- pursued: Not by many. That's the nature of the Net…
A magazine without an editor is — what? :) The Dead Letter office.
I remember when MyOpera mods would insist that thread titles needed to be appropriately descriptive (…presumably because their search algorithms were piss-poor facsimiles, hence the titles needed to give all the clues needed…). Well, they gave up.
(Both posters and publishers.)
Perhaps our mods should become editors in the traditional sense: Titles have -for as long as I've known- been the purview of editors…
You've seen what happens when incompetent editors insist upon titles who no one would likely care about. And you've seen what happens when there is no editorial control whatsoever…
There is a middle course.
(Mods: Are you willing to exchange ideas with posters…? Before they initiate new threads?)
There is a middle course.
Oakdale pursuing the "Third Way"?
American elites seems to be a little bit demodé these days... :)
Okay, I agree.
There is a middle course.
Is it before or after the main course? Or is it the same thing as main course, but smaller and with pretentious assumption that it's something different?
I don't know. Oak, are you really sure you want the mods to be editors? I mean, beyond the obvious trashing of spam and trying to make sure things don't get too personal?
I've got a feeling if one of y'all start tinkering with his posts he might feel a little different.
This is probably the right thread to post your favourite DnD First Page, in other words the url you use to access these forums, or the url you have bookmarked, if it's something different than mere thedndsanctuary.eu
Mine is https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml;limit=80
I am perhaps not unusual in preferring https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?board=1.0 ? :)
When I click on "Mark All as Read", do all those damfool spampostings score another "view" in their statistics?
No, that only happens when you actually visit a topic. :)
Thank you. That takes a load off my mind.
Oh non not that damn "awesome" word again?
It used to be that the word was for something really outstanding and now it is used for things that are hardly more than routine. it started in the States and getting worked in here in GB. Even a tv advert (groan). On my railway simulator world it is a regular thing from Americans. It is more frustrating than say being forced to live in Edinburgh.
I have been disappointed to discover that DnD Sanctuary is a bit of a fraud. It is a post-graduate research paper undertaken by some of the moderators. Not all of the posters are real. Many of us, of course, are flesh and blood, but the more colourful characters are entirely manufactured. They serve the same function as does dietary roughage, which provides the necessary bulk to encourage the efficient movement of food through the digestive system, without providing any nourishment themselves. Some of their posts are eerily reminiscent of peristalsis.

Brilliant.
How's that for a substitute RJ?
Just thinking back to this conversation Southern laddie. Brilliant in theory and sounds an improvement but the emotional way your lot act that word would be spoiled too!

Sad news to report; mjmsport40 died yesterday evening, according to Facebook.
RIP.

I must confess I hadn't realized what was being said in this post until know. Interesting, very interesting.
Glad I'm not a colourful character.
Are you sure? :pirate:
These are the kind of discussions we enjoy most at the DnD Sanctuary. New members are expected to contribute enthusiastically.

I'm both surprised and pleased, that thread titles can be changed… It's an unusual functionality.
Thread titles usually could, also in earlier incarnations, but there were often bugs, so they were changed in some places, but not in all.
More unusual, but far from unique, is the feature of this forum that individual posts can have their own titles. Replies to these will by default be "Re: Title", email style.
Hah, hah. I am colourful and not a snooty person......
What's going on?
Well it's Christmas.

Somebody gotta do it. If not you, then rjhowie.
I'm annoyed it took so long, but a few things happened simultaneously in January and February that somewhat got in the way.
- It suddenly turned out that my cat Kuma had lymph node cancer. We spent a month with her while we still thought she had some quality of life. We had to put her down last month.
- My wife's SSD suddenly died without warning.
- Apparently the booklet in which she'd also written down her passwords has been lost since we moved.Logic dictates it's around here somewhere, but alas.
So effectively most of my spare time was spent with the cat, and I couldn't really do anything about the domain name.
Sorry to hear about your cat. :(
Thanks. :)
I think I fixed up everything now, i.e., replaced thedndsanctuary.eu with dndsanctuary.eu for the forum, themes, smileys and avatars, except I haven't updated existing links in posts yet. Let me know if you notice anything else that's weird because in that case I haven't noticed it yet.
Edit: link replacement done.
For future reference, I used this unoptimized query:
UPDATE elkdnd_messages SET body = replace(body, '://thedndsanctuary.eu', '://dndsanctuary.eu')
Let me know if you notice anything else that's weird because in that case I haven't noticed it yet.
Only thing I did notice so far, was that there was a bit of delay after hitting the Post button, but that was probably while you were tinkering with things.
Edit: Of course It's OK now that I've typed that.
I meant more like images or links pointing to thedndsanctuary.eu. :D
Welcome back online
Sorry about the cat :(
Weirdly, the site seems to not load in old Opera. Not vitally important though, I guess. Old Opera is really old by now.
That's probably HTTPS related. It might still be possible to update the root certificates in Opera/Presto, not sure.
This is very peculiar. The server has a setting for TLS 1.2+, which "deactivates outdated protocol versions TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, forcing TLS 1.2 or higher. This may prevent old devices from accessing your website."
That's all well and good, and it would explain if the site didn't work on Opera <10 (https://dev.opera.com/blog/new-in-opera-presto-2-2-tls-1-2-support/). But while Opera/Presto doesn't support TLS 1.3 from 2018, it does support TLS 1.2!
In any case, disabling that setting works, and Opera/Presto says it's connected with "TLS v1.2 256 bit AES (2048 bit DHE_RSA/SHA-256)".
It remains to be seen for how long this will remain an option, but for now Opera/Presto can still access the site.
That's probably HTTPS related. It might still be possible to update the root certificates in Opera/Presto, not sure.
PS If I'm not mistaken the current root certificate seems to remain valid until 2031, so there's a distinct chance the TLS version will have become problematic by then. But in theory, I think it should be possible to download the latest root certificates here (https://www.digicert.com/kb/digicert-root-certificates.htm), and to import the downloaded PEM file in Opera/Presto this way:
Preferences → Advanced → Security → Manage Certificates → Authorities → Import
Weirdly, the site seems to not load in old Opera.
Works for me (on 11.64).
Had the problem with
enforced HTTPS a while back; I can find the link for a new root certificate that I used, if anyone needs it...
Hello, everybody! It's good to see so many familiar
avatars... :)
Old Opera doing good now
I imported some certificates too, just in case 2031 arrives earlier than expected.
A little heads up, there's a chance that I'll look into upgrading the forum software tonight. My preparations from 2017 () seem to be more or less ready to go. I hope it won't break old Opera too much, but without the newer version we'd be stuck with unsupported PHP 7.2. I'm also hoping it'll automagically fix the registration issues.
Anyway, I'll take a backup of the database and the files so I can always roll back to the current condition if it should truly be necessary.
Okay, we're back in minimal mode. I'll be restoring functionality over the next few days.
I missed you all.
I'm glad the forum is back, and I'm sorry for your cat (I understand how sad it must be that situation :( ). A small detail I noticed, is that using Firefox 52, the 'Likes' button does not work (it does not respond, nor does it give any error in the browser's console).
Firefox 52? I see no reason it shouldn't work in there; perhaps the server was just being a bit slow responding?
Ooh! Likes the new icons. :)
Newbie here from Texas. Oakdale turned me on to this place. I am a refugee from the cancel culture globalist madness and looking for stimulating and unbiased exchange about the latest in biophysics and bioelectromagnetics ala www.bems.org .
