Odd you should highlight the word in red. It can apart from making a kind of point look hypocricical when your irish pals are beyond the ken.

Odd you should highlight the word in red.

Quite so, considering how the church tried for centuries to put down the holiday. Santa comes to bring gifts, just as various solar deities returned to bring gifts of the Earth. Jesus himself is a hodgepodge of various old deities. Who was the son of God, rode into the capital city on a donkey, was reviled by the religious authorities, crucified and rose again on the third day? Dionysus. Jesus's connection to wine is also interesting to note. Much of the rest of him comes from Mithra. What the historical Jesus supposedly preached was some good stuff about non-judgement, etc but Christianity itself forgot those and became more like the "generation of vipers" Jesus warned against.

No doubt Mr. Howie celebrated the Winter Solstice by having one too many Diet Irn Bru's?

Why do I doubt other powers aren't also in so deep?

While you turn so much resentment to the US one has to wonder what your country is doing in the shadows. The ignorant bliss of finger pointing is always a temporary illusion.

I prefer reasoned discussion to frantic pissing contests. No qualms about participating in either tho.

You look to simplify everything in to the US's fault regardless of who else seems willing to indulge. Irrational and short-sided wasn't my first impression of you.

With a contingent of 5,350 soldiers and policemen, Germany is one of the main contributors of troops to coalition operations in Afghanistan. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Armed_Forces_casualties_in_Afghanistan)

Wasn't the title of this thread "Merry Christmas"?

My word, some people have weird methods of celebrating what is at least supposed to be a joyful holiday.

Happy New Year to you, too--- if you can keep from blaming the US long enough to ring in the new year.

That's the nature of the beast, sir. All threads travel down that road.

Start one on drinking fine wine and it will eventually wander to pissing in the alley.

Drop me an e-mail sometime if you're going to be in or near Belgium and would like to meet up. That being said, Munich is rather out of the way and in any case I think I'd rather avoid it during the Oktoberfest. Plus who knows whether I'll have any time in October. But if you're going up further north after a few days, like to Frankfurt or the Ruhr district… or heck, to Belgium or the Netherlands. Well, you know how to contact me. ;)

It was used as a pretty movement (theme and variations) in a string quartet. Haydn, I think.
It also appears in a general-purpose Protestant hymn-book. "Glorious things of Thee are spoken". Or suchlike.

lol, Indeed, I perhaps may be a bit unstable.

Yes, well, that song's first two stanza's are the current extent of my known German.  :D

@Frenzie: I will indeed Sir; a musician friend of mine wants me to pop 'round Antwerp while I'm over there. That would be awesome!

@krake: Cheers Sir.  :cheers:

Still haven't heard back from the job I'm supposed to get. God how I loathe waiting on a massive state bureacracy to process it's shite and jump through it's hurdles. (Have the first month's pay held back as well, which is why IRL, I am getting quite anxious.)
