This forum is meant to test the software[1], the technical feasibility, and, to some extent, interest.
The goal isn't presently replacement of D&D or migration from D&D. Depending on what Opera decides, it may never be. For now, it is at most a safety net.
Please ask here if you have any questions about this forum not pertaining to administrative issues like forum categories, moderation, security questions, etc.
[1] Does it work, do we like it.
hail Frenzie!!
(my first post here.. is this thing on?)
Once we work out the kinks (there's always bugs in new systems) this format seems to be workable enough. We could do a lot worse than this for sure.
Anyone tested the mail/message service?
I've received two e-mails from the forum sent to me by string as a test, and I've exchanged a couple of PMs with j7n. Right now it sends it on behalf of my Gmail account, but I should probably set it up as something like no-reply@dnd.fransdejonge.com which will ignore whatever spam comes its way.
Nnnice.
The forum search works. Tho the algorithm isn't great with anything but (an) exact keyword(s)
Out of curiousity, who is j7n?
I sent a PM to Frenzie yesterday...
Got it?
Though the content... It's appeared that a handful of geeks had already been present in here, so...
Yes, though I don't believe a description needs to be a full grammatical sentence.
Out of curiousity, who is j7n?
(https://www.smileyfaze.tk/thumbs/dunno04.gif)Beats the spit outa me Reb, but maybe someone else knows----but they jus ain't sayin' right yet. Bein' this is a new forum, thing can take a bit of time.

@frenzie - Frans, I reported one of your posts to see if the reporting mechanism worked - did the report get through to you?
Just testing (learning BB Code)...
You'll find the list of BB Codes here (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Alphabetical_list_of_all_bulletin_board_codes).
The WYSIWYG Editor is fairly complete! (https://dndsanctuary.eu/imagecache.php?image=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.myopera.com%2FOakdaleFTL%2Fblog%2Fdt.png&hash=81057c5d5cee99cc70d341b53541bd18" rel="cached" data-hash="81057c5d5cee99cc70d341b53541bd18" data-warn="External image, click here to view original" data-url="http://files.myopera.com/OakdaleFTL/blog/dt.png)
(It even includes a pre-formatted text block tool…) How does it handle foreign characters? And it shows recent posts (in reverse order) correctly, below the edit box! (An old "groan" from MyOpera.)
It seems that the Strike-out button "sticks" —
but the Preview button un-sticks it!. Bold, italic and underline toggle correctly…
Well, maybe the problem with Strike-out is me? (Is it supposed to work like a blue pencil? :) )A nice touch: Quotes of other's posts include the link to the original. (Unless you manually delete them… ;D )
@frenzie - Frans, I reported one of your posts to see if the reporting mechanism worked - did the report get through to you?
Yes, it did.
How to insert images?
I tried to steal something from MyOpera, but...
Let me try some combinations:
[img=http://static.myopera.com/community/graphics/forum/icon3_new.gif]http://[/img],
[img="http://static.myopera.com/community/graphics/forum/icon3_new.gif"][/img],
[img="http://static.myopera.com/community/graphics/forum/icon3_new.gif"]http://,
and [img=http://static.myopera.com/community/graphics/forum/icon3_new.gif].
Maybe [img=http://static.myopera.com/community/graphics/forum/icon3_new.gif]http://static.myopera.com/community/graphics/forum/icon3_new.gif[/img]?
Maybe those are unstealable?

BMPs don't work, do they?
I should hope not. They're gigantic. But you can always link to them.
@Frenzie
JFYI......BMP files will work.....I just tried a 2+mb 1024x768 file, & on Preview it worked.
I have no doubt that it would have posted if I chose to send it.
You might want to see if you have a way to limit BMPs by size, or if not, totally eliminating the ability to direct post them at all. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/imthinkin6.gif)
This can pose way more bandwidth grief to the Forum than any posted youtube video, whereas the BMP file auto-loads, & the video is just a visual container that loads its payload only upon the request of the viewer.
It has just as much impact of any other mid-sized IMG file. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/exitstageright.gif)
I mostly meant that I have no interest in creating a video bbtag myself, while I will personally implement or modify a proper quick quote feature if migration actually becomes necessary.
I took a quick look around and I suppose this premade addon might do:
YouTube bbcode:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eIDtwcFXcI[/youtube]
Just a link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eIDtwcFXcI
Wrapped in url bbcode to prevent embedding:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eIDtwcFXcI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eIDtwcFXcI)
YouTube bbcode:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eIDtwcFXcI[/youtube]
Just a link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eIDtwcFXcI
Wrapped in url bbcode to prevent embedding:
[url]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eIDtwcFXcI[/url]
I'm not a big fan of the automatic link functionality though, plus I think a video bbcode with YouTube support would be better (i.e. more universal/extendable). I'll leave this one up for a bit to see how it works out.
That's odd,,,,,I was testing using the PREVIEW facility, when it posted....without my doing so!! (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/skrewball004.gif)
I saw a Flash code, & not knowing I thought it may readjust the size of the embedded container.....it didn't...Cest la vie (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/chuckle002.gif)
Odd.
I'm with Frenzie against video from that particular site. Threads with these embedded flash windows are unbrowsable memory hogs. Even when I'm interested in one post, I am forced to load most of the embedded players.
You should use Opera's plugin on demand functionality. :)
Besides not filling up the forum pages, this little test above taught me some other things: I can c/p regular links (or add an item to my right-click menu or some such) to open them in a proper video player, or to process them with a script (https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl). VLC comes with YouTube URL support baked in. Plus if you load it in a text-based browser you only get an iframe. This means a proper video bbcode should stick the URL underneath the video. In summary, it looks like I'd have to write it myself to get it right, but like I said before it's not a problem I'm especially interested in solving.
You convinced me; I disabled this particular add-on. I would advise people who like embedded videos to utilize a userscript like Videoembed (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7686).
Try pressing play on this lil demon. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/BigToothSmile.gif)

The best of both worlds.. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/chuckle002.gif)
The first one is similar to the one I posted, while the second one is just a video file link which comes up as a new tab here, & as a "Save As" Download request.
Ahhh, you're correct my FireFox Quick Time Plugin streams mp3s (1814) in the browser.
With the .mkv video I have the choice to save it, or I can 'Open with' WMP.
I would have to guess I can choose for it to stream via option, but if I remember correctly, a long while ago I ordered it to always ask for this file type.
I could do the same with .mp3s too.
The best of both worlds.. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/chuckle002.gif)
That's a pretty decent concept actually. It's a shame that it's probably not the most straightforward option.
I made the Image actual Youtube size in my example for no particular reason, but I would probably use a smaller (not too too much smaller) Image (http://i.imgur.com/HWAFqRF.jpg)of the original Youtube (or video host of origin) Image (50-70%).........the actual intention is not to deceive the reader, but to signify that it is a Video they can watch, & a very limited visual taste as to the content of the Video. (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/exitstageright.gif)(https://www.smileyfaze.tk/thumbs/good.gif)
The picture did get my Internet security alarms ringing. The time display at the bottom was surrounded by ClearType Christmas pixels. And since I don't use subpixel fonts, I knew it was not the real player....
BRAVO!!!! My internal alarm always rings too .... Trust if you will, [glow=red,2,300]
but if you're like me....always verify!!![/glow] (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cheerskj4.gif)
I just saw this: DnD Central
Discuss political madness, orchestrate grand religious debates, explore urban development potential, you name it.
Frans' sense of humor and his obvious intellect (…yeah, I'm sucking up! But I've read some of his writings — including code…) don't explain "urban development"…
Is jax on-board? :)
Is jax on-board?
Not yet, but I have my fingers crossed. ;)
Let's test attaching something...
Gosh!
Attach:
(Clear Attachment)
(more attachments)
Allowed file types: css, js, py, odt, txt, tar.lz
Restrictions: 4 per post, maximum total size 192KB, maximum individual size 10KB
O'k, it's not helping at all.. >:( I guess we'd better think about where to put our stuff! :(
I haven't quite decided whether to turn attachments on or off, but note that 10kB isn't completely worthless. For instance, my Textarea Backup UserJS comes in at over 20kB, but compressed it can be less than 7kB. The main question there is whether it's worthwhile over e.g. PasteBin or Github.
I don't know either guy your mentioned last.
Yes, for text it's not insignificant. Next time somebody if not me will check attaching some txt or odt to see how it looks when done.
By the way, do we do grammar?
Author Topic: Photo Albums (Read 1 times)
Is there a button to correct such stuff, Frans?:)
I see nothing wrong.
I see nothing wrong.
Do we do grammar or do we not?
Read 1 times
It is nevertheless minor and rare, still...
Just asking. ;)
Oh, right. I think displaying the read count up there is kind of silly regardless, so I might remove it completely in the DnD theme.
:P
O'k, let me test the attaching. By the way, I did try it just now. The story is that when one of the files occurred to be oversized, and I had an"error" page, the "back" button dropped me "to the void": I had the thread page that looked as if my attachment attempt had never existed, and my further "back-buttoning" proved the forum "really had thought" so. Perhaps I should've just right away hit my keyboard "back", but -- are we testing the place or what?
I can't confirm that. The message remains intact in Opera/Presto, Chromium, and Firefox. (As an aside, clearly ODT was a mistake. It's way too bloated.)
O'k, they look that way... (No "in-page view"? No? Just asking...)
Well (not exactly), what I was trying to note about the attaching in that failed attempt mentioned, is:
- what about RTF? No way? And - ods? Just asking...
- most of the odts I went through in my files trying to find something to attach here are much more than 10 kB; I mean is that '10kB' just to be a plain text 1 page thing or what? that'll be not at all enough, I guess...
(checked the "list" feature (not numbered))
Besides, while I was typing,
Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.
What shall I have done? Suppose I wanted to "review"? I didn't find any "review" button. Nor any preview for my currently created post was available! (I always preview my posts.)
Correction: I saw your "meanwhile" submission, ok. I just didn't get it
- the other posts on the preview page are upside-down and
- I didn't thus get what that was about.
Yes, my forum settings implement that I see the posts chronologically not "the newest first". But the preview displayed posts the other way.
I can't confirm that. The message remains intact in Opera/Presto, Chromium, and Firefox. (As an aside, clearly ODT was a mistake. It's way too bloated.)
I use Chrome. And the site with 150% zoom -- and I set that BEFORE you've adjusted the text range from your side.
O'k, we dump odt? And other OO, ok. Now what about RTF? They are obviously plain text and usually not very heavy as well. The thing is I, for one, prefer the format to make my notes and other stuff here offline...
You can use e.g. Dropbox or Wuala as a file sharing service.
What kind of stuff do they share?
Well, I see this is a tiny place...
Anything.
You can use e.g. Dropbox or Wuala as a file sharing service.
What kind of stuff do they share?
I haven't found any file Dropbox wouldn't accept, & accumulative storage space is a generous 2gb--up to 16 gb with referrals (last I checked).....I'm not familiar with Wulala.
A short couple of months ago, Dropbox discontinued
'Public Links' whereas if you uploaded to a special folder called
'Public'.
Dropbox would generate a link upon request---generate a public link for sharing the file,
Like I said, that's been done away with, but I know a manipulative work-around,
that enables you to manually create your own sharing link for any file you wish to share.
What they replaced the sharing option PUBLIC feature with is a 'User to User' collaborative synced folder system.
You can set up a
'shared with' folder whereas anything uploaded can be collaboratively shared/synched with other selected Dropbox user(s).
Here's my Dropbox Referral Link (https://db.tt/WthQbXCN)....all you need to do is sign up for the free service (there is a paid PRO service too) & when you do
we both earn another 500mb of free space to upload to. No obligation, but hell free space is free space...(https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cheerskj4.gif)
Sounds like a drop.;D
Wuala is used by Aard Dictionary (http://aarddict.org/) to host its downloads. It's a lot like Dropbox, but more secure in more ways than just being European. On the downside, usability is lower.
Frans, would you be going to implement certain 'dialogues'. Like MyOpera posting tools as to input links etc.? Along with a 'quick quote' thingie, it'd make living here sort of cosier:)
I understand it may cause some trouble about the site working properly or such, won't it?
Like MyOpera posting tools as to input links etc.?
If there's someone with sufficient Javascript knowledge willing to do it for me, perhaps. I would suggest developing Javascript add-ons as userscripts so people can use them regardless of whether I like it enough to add it as default functionality.
Along with a 'quick quote' thingie, it'd make living here sort of cosier:)
With a little help from the My Opera enhancements, I managed to throw together a mostly functional quick quote in very little time. Unfortunately xErath never replied to my request to use his code, and I obviously can't put it up as a feature unless I get permission.
I understand it may cause some trouble about the site working properly or such, won't it?
Que?
Qua!
I'm not a programmer, but my manual workaround is simple.
1. Goto the post where the text you wish to quote appears.
2. Copy (highlight ➜ right click ➜ copy) the text you wish to quick-quote.
3. Click the (https://dndsanctuary.eu/imagecache.php?image=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FgpfYW4x.jpg&hash=1f3a50eddcfe9f1ea46f7e35a50425cf" rel="cached" data-hash="1f3a50eddcfe9f1ea46f7e35a50425cf" data-warn="External image, click here to view original" data-url="http://i.imgur.com/gpfYW4x.jpg) on the post.
4. Now, in the Quick Reply Textbox select & delete all the quoted text, & then paste in the text you copied earlier in the appropriate place.
Viola ➨ A Manual (not so quick) Quick Quote ☺
It's stupid because with a single quote even your quoting feature is an overkill - when everybody is capable of typing a couple of tags. The quick quote is useful when someone needs to pick several quotes from - even from several posts and even by different authors if desired.
Well, Josh ..... It's something I chose to share ..... if you feel it's stupid, don't frikkin use it....Personally, I use FireFox with the Custom Buttons Extension installed, & I've made a Custom Button, that when pressed makes a quick quote template on any selected text -- as I used here (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=6.msg1962#msg1962).
Now, until & if an all browser javascript is implemented for quick-quote in this forum, a manual method (any smarter method of your particular choice) is your only recourse......sowieee (https://www.smileyfaze.tk/slides/cleanteeth09.gif)
accumulative storage space is a generous 2gb--up to 16 gb with referrals (last I checked)
Dropbox currently gives me 19.5GB due to their Space Race (https://www.dropbox.com/help/391/en), of which I use a whopping 300 MB. I only use it because it's the very simplest way to keep stuff I'm currently working on in sync; once a year or so I clean up my stuff there because it tends to accumulate. I was up to nearly 5GB early this summer, but got it down to 50MB in August. Back when I was still limited to 2-3GB it forced me to clean up earlier, which had its benefits.
Attachments of less than 10 kB are quite useful to post configuration files or scripts in connection to what's said on the post itself, without bothering how to convert them to plaintext so that they can be converted back later or loading a larger (hundreds of kB) file upload service.
Those were pretty much my thoughts. About a thousand of such files would take merely 10MB, and thanks to compression it might well be a limit closer to 25-30kB.
Dropbox still has the disadvantages that it is heavy and slow once you get to hundred or so files per directory, and that it may at its own discretion wipe your account on copyright grounds. What's file sharing without an occasional copyright infringement, eh?
I've been planning to backup Dropbox less manually (http://aaronparecki.com/articles/2010/07/09/1/how-to-back-up-dropbox-automatically-daily-weekly-monthly-snapshots). They really wipe your entire account? How would they even know whether the PDFs of articles and books I work with are unlawfully in my possession or not? (Hint: they're not.)
How would they even know whether the PDFs of articles and books I work with are unlawfully in my possession or not? (Hint: they're not.)
I just realized this might be easily misinterpreted. The PDFs are not unlawfully in my possession, i.e. they're lawfully in my possession.
Yeah, you're :right:!;)
Let me test something - as we're where we are :D
[abbr=What does this last thing do exactly?]?[/abbr]
It's meant to be used more like this:
HTML.
No, I meant 'the last before that':P I just decided to check if the {abbr} works
in addition.
:) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-/ :-* :'(
Frans, your "Undecided" requires a backslash which is normally not found within the BrE keyboard layout. For one, I can only have it on my keyboard when in the Russian mode. ???
Testing "Quick Reply" preview...
Well, now I have the smileys... What was that (before)?
Frans, your "Undecided" requires a backslash which is normally not found within the BrE keyboard layout.
That doesn't sound right. Anyway, you can always click the images?
NO - I'd better be DECIDED! :P
If only you could do that pre-post... :-\
If only you could do that pre-post... :-\
Is something wrong with the preview feature?
I've just encountered an apparent glitch with that "new replies etc." stuff: from the board, I saw the "Central" showing "new posts", and the link was in place; I clicked - "no new".
It mustn't have been a coincidence of a deleted post - cause I repeated the checking (with reloading) 2 or 3 times.
(Congrat me - I'm a fool member now!:hat:)
Isn't it more likely that you already opened the new post in the background or something?
Sry, the little smartass inside me must of typed that.
On an actual problem:
The first one is similar to the one I posted, while the second one is just a video file link which comes up as a new tab here, & as a "Save As" Download request.
I got this using the quick quote from just selecting the word 'posted' with Opera M.
Sry, the little smartass inside me must of typed that.
Isn't it more likely that you already opened the new post in the background or something?
I said I'd repeated that a couple of times. Should I've cleared the cache eash time?
What about establishing a temporary forum section sort of "Testing area"? I'd like the polling thing to get worked with. It'll require starting several 'fake' topics with the polls differing in settings, that sort...
Frans, that was not a joke.
The new board just - for several times - showed me 1) the "new" icon, 2) "1 topic, 2 posts"; but hitting that "new" pile of paper, I saw "no new" - for a couple of times; and only having hit the main link there (the title), eventually I saw the topic with the orange "new" thingy with it.
There must be something not very well with that "new replies" mechanism...
Add.: for the second time I notice not having either smilies nor other upper tools in the preview mode.
Ho! ho! ho. (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?topic=77.0)
What about establishing a temporary forum section sort of "Testing area"? I'd like the polling thing to get worked with. It'll require starting several 'fake' topics with the polls differing in settings, that sort...
Please welcome to the Testing Board (https://dndsanctuary.eu/index.php?board=5.0) and participate in our polling exercises
;)
Part of the problem comes not necessarily from the font itself, although it doesn't help, but from the relative lack of contrast. Checking the contrast (http://snook.ca/technical/colour_contrast/colour.html) tells me that #666 on #f9f9f9 is technically WCAG 2 AA Compliant, but a contrast ratio of 5.45 is not much even with a better font. Changing it to #444 or #333 results in a pretty big improvement. You'd think it's pretty obvious you can't use guidelines aimed at normal fonts with very thin fonts.
From SMF's bulletin:
[table]
[tr][td]text[/td][td]or more[/td][/tr]
[tr][td]BB[/td][td]Code[/td][/tr]
[/table]
Same bulletin:
text or more BB Code (and here's a tabulation after the closing "tt" too!)
The code:
[tt]text or more BB Code[/tt]
(Ah! it just was my copypaste:fool:)
...So, guys!
We can't use the "Tab" button to tabulate within the text typed here in the boxes — but we can get our home-made tabulated texts shown through copypasting here from some txt, RTF or something:
A B C D E F G H
A B C D E F G H
A B C D E F G
You might want to use [code] or <pre> for that kind of thing.
one
two
one
two
Edit: hm, looks like the forum converts it to spaces unless it's in [code]. That makes some kind of sense, but goes against proper PRE imo.
How would I use "code" for that kind of stuff!? ("tt" is bullshit - in terms of right-now-seeing what you're doing actually.)
How would I use "code" for that kind of stuff!?
Because it preserves whitespace. HTML doesn't preserve whitespace, except apparently the forum does by turning it all into non-breaking spaces. I'm not convinced that's a good thing.
Look:
Column 1 column 2 column 3
bullshit 1 bullshit 2 bullshit 3
crap 1 crap 2 crap 3
Column 1 column 2 column 3
bullshit 1 bullshit 2 bullshit 3
crap 1 crap 2 crap 3
How does it look for you? ???
Nah, it doesn't do columns!..:crack!!:
...the forum does by turning it all into non-breaking spaces.
???
Where did you see that?
I said it preserves tabs and spaces the way you type them, not that it makes them into columns. Tables are for columns.
Where did you see that?
The HTML source to this page. Or you can just select the text to see that it's spaces and not tabs.
Stop!..
Column 1 column 2 column 3
bullshit 1 bullshit 2 bullshit 3
crap 1 crap 2 crap 3
poops 1 poops 2 poops 3
When "coded", it seems to do columns... ???
...Oh crap... :faint:
A B C D E F G H
A B C D E F G
What did you just say?
To compare:
X O X
O X O
X O X
Yup, the initial tabulation at each line is [was] presented/shown - for me. M?

Allowing iframes would pose a security risk.
This is a testing forum
:P
:)
Got it.
Hey!
I'm now accessing the forum via my mobile phone. The interface here lacks many options, and my phone is quite dull
at typing.
And the message input box only allows me up to 120 characters.
I decided to check that access because the Jump Quote seemingly demised: ie the WAP interface doesn't have any such stuff anyway - so one won't expext any "differences":rip:
This forum makes more tests than Americans did to put a man in the moon...
Dnd astronaut will never go anywhere... :)
Locked, things have changed since November.
