Who do you listen to, who listens to you?

I remember the beginning of Talk Radio: Avi Nelson in Boston. He was acerbic, rude and to the point… There hadn't been anything on the radio like his show, before.
Before him, we had the Larry's Glick and King…
(I liked them both.)

But American politics became more contentious. And contentiousness became more acceptable…

TV and newspapers don't offer many access. Radio, however, did! Call-in shows, live…!

Who -I'd ask y'all- were your local radio hosts? Which ones -and, of course, why- did you habitually listen to?  :) I don't expect a political or philosophical tome.
Just tell me what about their shows caught and kept your attention.

I listen to two radio shows but not religiously. Both are on National Public Radio, one classical music, the other random talk, sometimes political, other times not.

I also have access to Siriusxm on my laptop and in the car. I can connect the laptop to a stereo speaker via bluetooth.

You know none of them, don't make silly questions.
A matter of attitude.

Don't make silly answers! Of course, I know none of them; that's why I asked! Had you actually answered, I could hear them, no?
If you listen to no one on local radio, say so. If you do listen, name the show/host… Why is that so difficult, for you?
(I'm specially bemused, because I know you have a voice well-suited to radio…)

Is it safe to assume you were not a fan of Alec Baldwin's Air America show? :)

I do miss the "good ol' days" — which was when FM was non-commercial; and, later, when even tiny Oakdale, CA had an AM station that played nothing but classical music.

I'm not a fan of any ratio show. As indicated, I do listen to music occasionally.

Never heard of the Baldwin show.

Nope.
Radio is the media of solitude. There's nothing but you and the FM ether waves. Therefore it can be so intense and intimist but you know no culture of mine, no values of mine, no radio of mine.
My radio programs were not yours and yours were not mine, the same way my world is mine and yours it's yours.

But your words were fertile. Maybe we could change this moribund forum into an online internet radio show. Like the ones I used to listen when words, message and art were important.
What a challenge. :)
A matter of attitude.

Amongst my several projects, one of them is to create an internet subversive radio.
Maybe some of you want to make part of it?

On my childhood days on the radio I listened to PC99 and List in Space by the BBC. We got our first television a Bush 12" the night before the Queen's Coronation back in 1953. Being the only family around with a tv the neighbours helped bake sausage rolls, bridies and other snacks and people all crammed in to watch the ceremony and again at night when there was a film of it.  Although only a bairn at primary school I liked the radio and also listened to a weekly programme that had a famous person n who listed their favourite music or sons which were then played. In Town Tonight was another great prog interviewing famous people who had arrived in London.

I liked the dramas, the comedies and what eventually became "talk shows"… The TMZ sort of stuff seems always to have appealed to you, RJ. (I'm not surprised: You like to be noticed, and therefore know you have to notice others… Typically British.)

I'll repeat (in case such is still available…) that back when Larry King and Larry Glick were the hottest things on AM late-night radio, Sunday evenings from midnight til 2 AM Kenny Meyer broadcasted comedy from the basement of his home in Copley Square — in his underwear! (So he said.) Great shows!

(Update: I just found out Ken was blind… How would you know, on radio? :) )

Imagine a Yank saying that someone else likes to be noticed! By the way, Larry King is on RT every week.  The man is alwayss worth a watch and listen.

Of course he is! For the old guard socialists, and others who don't or can't keep up he's Must See TV! :)
Back when he was doing celebrity interviews, he did okay. When he tried his hand at politics he showed himself to be -well- a moron.
You wouldn't know that, RJ. Your usual fare is — well, you know! (But I grant, a lot of Americans don't; because a British accent is so-o sophisticated! :) They don't know that the words aren't supposed to be listened to and understood… It's very un-British!
The Scots way is better: Talk so that no one can understand you, and then claim that no one understands you. :) )

Make up your mind in-between dimwit sessions. One minute you like Larry then the next you don't. Being sozzled and a Yank is quite a problem so I will make allowances.

Internet killed the pirate radio stars,

Norway, somewhat quixotically, is about to kill off FM radio and go purely digital (DAB+). Other countries have cancelled or postponed the digital switch-over, but not Norway. Starting next year analog radio is switching off.

Norway Pioneers the Digital Radio Future, Abandoning FM

The question of course is: Will it matter? I haven't listened to broadcast radio for years, all my (currently modest) radio listening is over the Internet.

It's not "one minute and the next," RJ… Back when King was schmoozing with celebrities, he was a pretty good interviewer. He understood their world. When he tried to transition to politics (although he never tried to become a policy wonk himself), he was immediately out of his depth.
But at least he kept his suspenders! :)
